Could this game benefit from competitive multiplayer?
I'm thinking something along the lines of Bushido Blade crossed with Awesomenauts.

• The main event would be two teams of 5 ninjas (although should also allow for FFA or 1v1) in a large strategic arena.

• Each player has a 3-5 hit health bar but only one life per round. When a player is hit, they will flash for 5 seconds where they cannot attack or be attacked (to prevent stunlocks and force players to retreat after a sucessful attack).

• The skill pool may have to be restricted to keep things balanced, and could probably benefit from a triple jump for increased maneuver ability.

I'm just thinking aloud here so don't flame please, but what do you guys think?

(PS I'm at work so this isn't as thought out or detailed as I would like. Just a first draft)

It'd probably end up like Spelunky deathmatch, which was terrible

I never played that so wouldn't know.

My vision is of something quite deep and strategic, but fast paced, like street fighter or something.

Sounds pretty interesting, like a deathmatch in SSBB. When I think potential for multiplayer with this game, I think split-screen race to the finish. I don't want to work the devs too hard though, maybe for Super House of Dead Ninjas 2 :p

I think the idea of a race to the bottom or a co-op mode would suit the game best and that's most likely what we would try out first, but I wouldn't rule out the idea of a vs mode entirely. :)

Personally I think a vs mode would be super awesome. A race to the bottom seems really cool, I can see little fights breaking out while descenting. I think any sort of multiplayer would greatly help the longevity of the playerbase and inspire more people to mess with the map editor.

A race mode could be good, the idea reminds me of Raskulls.

IMO Raskulls was good because it made the leaders slow down and think tactically about which blocks to destroy, so they didn't accidentally open up an easy path for the people following. This often allowed for the slower players to keep up (and feel less crap) and provided some very tense races which were lots of fun.

Maybe for a similar effect in SHODN you could have split paths and rooms which are blocked until all enemies are destroyed. You could even have shortcut rooms which only open once a certain ammount of enemies have been killed in that race, giving slower players a higher chance of having the room open by the time they get there.

Ooh you could even make it so that killing an enemy gives a slight temporary speed boost, giving players an incentive to kill stuff, instead of jumping over it and sliding down the towers walls. Would be a risk/reward type thing.

I don't really like the sound of a deathmatch. It just doesn't seem like this game is built to work with it.
I do, however, believe that this game should get a Race mode of some sort. Whoever dies 3 times first loses or you just see who best Abarghus first.

Speed races seem really cool, especially as leezeebub described. It'll also really let people bounce off of each other's energies.
