Abarghus no-death item doesn't unlock
I killed him without dying for sure (max magic capacity makes the fight only take four phases), but it didn't unlock. Does the ninja fight count as well? Let me know if any of you have gotten this item. Thanks in advance.

Thinking it might require doing it on hard. Not 100% on that, though.

I'm pretty sure I did it once on Normal and it didn't take. But I can't remember if I did it a second time still on Normal or not.

Ah yes, you're right - just had a look at the code and found that "lives_lost_to_boss" wasn't being set to zero when Abarghus appears as he is placed right after the One-Armed Ninja is defeated, in a different part of the code to where the other bosses are placed. This is now fixed but until the update arrives you'll have to defeat the One-Armed Ninja *and* Abarghus without losing a life. This might have been intentional at the time, but I don't think it really fits the wording of the item unlock text so I might as well change it. ;)

Defeating Abarghus in one life - No sweat. Defeating One-armed ninja in any less than 5 lives. OH MAN YOU ARE SCREWED.

Pfft. Easy peasy. Do a down slash as you jump over him when he flashes. Takes no more than 4 hits. Less, if you double hit sometimes. ;]
And I really like the nunchuks for him, to knock away the bombs and super ninja stars.

Yep, I hadn't even considered doing a downward attack on him until you mentioned it - certainly makes quick work of him! I'm looking forward to hearing about different boss strategies too with the various weapons.

I keep not checking on Abarghus, but I've suddenly thought when he leaves a rock in the center, a down slash is also useful. Not sure if it does more than the 3 hits you can usually do.
Still love the boomerang for Doom. Get the right distance and it wrecks him.
Doom EX definitely caught me off guard with his blue statues, though.

Megadev, you might find it surprising just how ridiculously overpowered the down slash IS.

It kills any non-boss monster in one hit and doesn't interrupt the flow of your movement at all.

It may seem difficult at first to reliably downward slash enemies, but if you use X-Padder and a controller and dedicate a button to jumping it becomes incredibly easy and trivializes most enemies, and if you use the nunchuks then it trivializes almost -every- enemy save for the porcupine monster.

Even the bomb heads are easy in this regard since you can easily hit the bomb away with the nunchuks before it's any trouble... not that I've ever had any trouble with them using other weapons using the downward attack either.

Yep, it's certainly an effective way of dealing with most enemies - there's only 3 or 4 enemies which take 2 hits or more though, so I don't think it's too powerful. If anything it seems like the rage meter is what makes the game easier, as long as you can keep it going, and ironically I think that the game becomes a little easier as more enemies appear. Perhaps we should add a hardcore mode with no rage bar...;)

Yeah, even the Light Saber Blazer isn't really that overpowered since there's only a few enemies that take more than one hit, and it doesn't seem to do extra damage on bosses. I think the game is balanced quite well at the moment, especially since it allows the player to have more control over there playthrough than most other games in the roguelike genre do.

Yeah. After about floor 500 in the basement, when it seems those general floors start spawing 2 mobs instead of one, that rage bar gets pretty easy to maintain. And once you reset to 1001, it's one long rush.

But y'know, I find it pretty fun blazing through everything. A no-rage mode might be interesting. Kinda like when the timer runs out. It gets pretty sketchy when I've gotta be fast AND careful.

That'd almost be an interesting mode itself. Outrun Death. =D

This probably isn't the right topic to ask this, but I'll do so anyway since it involves no-death killing Abarghus: Is there a way to tell where he's going to smash his hand on the floor? I've had him hit me while running, as well as standing still and having him hit the wall on the other side of the room, it seems completely random. Unless there's something obvious I'm missing (wouldn't surprise me) that hints at where he'll smack, it seems like a cheap way to lose a life during that fight when I can't even tell which way to dodge. :S

Nice idea! I'll make a note of that...

Yeah, I haven't been able to find any 100% consistent method of making him miss, either. It's ruined a few of my no-damage attempts on him, that's for sure. The most reliable method I've found is to stand in the corner, and immediately run to the right once you see his arm move upwards.

Ironically, I just unlocked the item by not dying on either boss, but I'm glad I was able to point the "bug" out to you guys regardless.

I think the best spot is maybe right where he opens up to release the bombs.
I used to just super jump as he did it, safe every time, but now it's kinda tough getting the timing right.

I use Tetsuo's approach, running from one corner to the other, double-jumping along the way. I expect there is somewhere on the screen where you can escape his attacks every time, but I'll leave that to you lot to figure out!
