For platform games i still prefer ps3 controller with XInput Wrapper for 360 emulation.

I've played with a Xbox 360 controller, DualShock 4 (PS4 controller) with some fan made drivers, and a SEGA Saturn USB controller and all worked just fine.

If you still cannot get it to detect your controller, you might have the issue of a controller device conflict.
I notice this game suffers from this silly problem too. You need to trick it into only seeing your gamepad.

Easiest way to do this, is to unplug any hardware that Windows treats as a controller. This can include many things, such as gaming keypads. You will need to restart your pc, after unplugging the device.

I used a PS2 controller using a USB Adapter. Worked just fine without having to use any third party software.
