Like a flame or just gaz, and if someone shoot through it, you have like 5 seconds before you can't use it anymore because all the gaz leaked out. + that will nerf it.
It doesn't need nerfing at all. You already are a big risk of being killed when using it, as soon as you fire the weapon.
A good flamethrower operator can do a lot of damage without question. Managed to wipe out F cap a few times singlehanded with a Flamethrower, just down to a lack of defence and people sniping out of the windows.
The way you said would just increase greifing from friendlies. The amount of times i've been shot whilst using a flamethrower by friendlys is stupid. How you can mistake someone spreading fire as a Japanese solider, i will never know.
Unfortunately, I can't find the video clip.
They also couldn't explode a propane tank without a minigun:

yes, they were a fire hazard when shot, it's not unheard of, but it's not like it would happen all that much, so i don't think it would feel right in the realistic setting of the game.
that being said, it IS a bit too easy and it should get a bit of a downside if you ask me. not too much, but something to make it not so stupidly easy. maybe the thing that the guy earlier said, where you stand at risk to set yourself on fire when firing in very enclosed spaces or at people directly in front of you, and a tiny delay in between firing the thing and it actually starting to shoot. or something like that. as it is now, it's a tad too much.
i know of these episodes, but the fuel inside the flamethrower container likely has a different composition then either car gas or propane.
