WARNING: foliage setting "exploit" returns (FIXED)
NOTE: THIS EXPLOIT WAS FIXED IN A RECENT UPDATE. THIS POST IS NO LONGER RELEVANT.

So it's confirmed, the developers learned nothing from HoS regarding grass.
Here is what happens when you set your foliage to low versus high.
The high setting places the player at a severe disadvantage:

This needs to be fixed ASAP. Devs need to lock the foliage to low or medium or high, I don't care. Just make the playing field level.

This technically not an exploit. Unless, the server you play on requires you to render foliage. However, I do fully agree that they at the very least need to keep a low-res version of it for when taking a lower setting due to the fact that a player whom has it on low settings clearly stands at an advantage.

I wonder why nothing has been done for this, considering this is a versus set multiplayer game where things such as these matter.

Yes, you're right. Technically it's legit, because the in-game menu allows it.

Exactly, because your performance is boosted through not rendering it on maps. Usually this matters little assuming the game is single-player or coop based. But, for a game like this - it presents a "legit" exploit. So your warning is still just as valid as before.

someone will most likely release a mutator that forces foliage on if the server wants it.

Wow!!! I had heard about this problem and knew that obviously if player A sees denser grass than B then B will have an advantage over A. But I had no idea that the difference was that huge Thich high grass vs no grass at all. This really should be fixed asap.

It's been said time and time again, it really doesn't matter.

The grass around you is only rendered up to a certain range, so anyone far enough away (a rifleman, a sniper, someone running to the front) will see you without grass around you to begin with. Is it annoying? Yes. Can it be fixed without making an unplayable game for people with lower end PCs? no. There is no way to "fix" it without forcing it, and forcing it would remove part of the community that legitamitely can not run the game with grass on. You wil also notice that when moving through grass, the bits of it immediately around you disappear so you can prone and still -somewhat- see.

If that indeed is the case, then why bother having it at all? Since it'll be more of a hinderence towards you rather than a neat and nice enviroment addon for you to utilize for your own benefit.

That is exactly why it's a graphics option; you can choose to play with it on or off. I prefer to play with it on, but understand that some play with it off and can see me in some circumstances that I can't see them. I avoid silhouetting myself on hill crests because of this, and instead use a lot of trees and other foilage as cover to prone through and get shots from.

With it off, the game still looks fairly good and you do forget that the grass is off after getting used to it, but I just prefer it on.

Hasn't been done in HoS on any server, AFAIK.

It's really only been used or forced on tournament servers, that's the only time I've heard it being forced.

The exact same problem is in the ARMA series, but there the servers force the foliage on.

Grass is pointless unless the map is a 50m flat square.

I really hope servers can force foliage on. It doesn't matter in RO2 but in RS it's really important. Jungles offer lots of concealment but not as much cover.

If that concealment isn't there (which it isn't on low foliage setting) then you are screwed. I just tested it myself on multiple maps and all I can say is I'm really disappointed.

Also, like the screenshots show, firing angles and viewpoints that shouldn't be there suddenly open up when you toggle foliage to low.

As I said above, it doesn't matter if you force grass on for everyone, as 25-50m away you will look like you're not surrounded by grass at all. Grass has a rendering distance, and anyone outside that distance will see you as laying in the sand.

The foilage slider does not affect the large bushes/ferns whatever that you can hide in on maps like Guadal Canal or the fallen trees in Kwajalein. These bushes are always there, no matter the setting.

actually dragon rising game has an easy fix,

they didnt draw the grass when u didnt have it enabled,

but instead blended u in and u only showed a bit when u moved or got up

they could do the same...
