Do you have to watch the show?
I don't have cable TV (I only use Netflix, Hulu+ and Cruchyroll on my PS3) should I watch the show to get more out of this game? I'm really on the fence on it, but if a lot of the lore and story is tied into the show - thats kind of cool. Does the TV show have any impact on the game at all? Thanks.

IMO, you can pretty much ignore the show. The tie-ins are weak and the whole thing's more of a marketing gimmick. Just read the in-game intel to get all the lore you need.

I would recommend watching the pilot episode though just to see the Volge siege if nothing else.

It helps a little if you want to get mor einto the lore, but no, you don't really need to. The game supports the show in terms of lore more than the other way around, really.

I find the line between the show and the game really thick. Except for some episode missions, I really miss the link between the two which is a real shame.

If you like the show, then that might enhance the game experience for you, but probably not much. I tried to watch the first episode, but it just oozes with SyFy cheese, so I didn't even make it through that. But I also hated Battlestar Galactica.

Show and game are two seperate things. Show for example is based in St Lous(you'll never go there in game and such is confirmed) and the game is in the San Fran bay area.

Game does very little to nothing to affect the show, The Show is the same. Why?

Because partly, the original intended efforts were supposed to be mutual but due to the games incessant issues with bugs and other problems many things that were supposed to be released or such during the show's season just didnt happen on time. They also said originally there was to be weekly things that occurred and coincided with what they wanted to have happen in the game, unfortunately most of the season it was scaled back to once every 2 weeks and now with the show over its once a month if that and mostly has been "rerun" of show tie-in content.

As another example of this, the first DLC was originally slated to release after the second or third week of april but was moved back then moved back again then announced to be at the end of july then last week announced it was moved back to "some time in august". 4 months after its originally slated release.

Content introduce for the game from the show is so so. For example they introduced plague(zombie) sieges to locations around the time in the show of a plague yet in the show no one ever zombied out, they just died if the virus was too far along. It was explained in 1 line that "the bay area strain was worse" and that was all that was said on it.

They did one contest already that put the likeness of the winner on a wanted poster in the last or so episode of the season for all of 2 seconds(what was funny is that the after airing twitch show with reps from the game showed the wrong name and clip from an earlier placeholder clip they got to use.). They have another similar contest that is wrapping up today doing similar yet things were pretty much stacked against the casual/regular player from the beginning(1 because there are clans of people supporting one person to use a few grey area exploits to tag the arkfalls for the first phase ending today... later its a facebook popularity voting contest in phase 3 with phase 2 being writers from the project writing a background story for your character that you have little to no control over to be voted on FB in the third phase.)

So all in all you dont have to watch the show. Some missions when they rerun the episode mission content will feel familiar but 99% of the lore and understanding of the world you'll get from playing the game alone or reading the wiki's

I highly recommend you watch the show; it's excellent. Not the best sci-fi on tv (Continuum is) but still highly entertaining.

I think the show has been improving over the course of the first season, so for those who judged it based on the first episode, I think you'd be surprised at how rapidly the characters are being developed.

As for the game and show tie ins, the game lore enriches the backround for the show and fills in some history and character background.
It is kind of fun when details of a mission you played in the game is mentioned in passing on the show.

Yes, that was puzzling to me, too.

To be fair, there was one scene where a patient violently freaked out and attacked the medicos, but it was very quick, he didn't look like a zombie, just feverish.
If I recall, they simply tranq'd him.

The "zombies" the one enemy group I don't like in Defiance and I will be glad when they are retired (I hope!) I think that it was a wise decision not to add the "zombies" to the show, it already has enough diverse elements, no need to try to ride on the coat-tails of The Walking Dead.

ah see i love the infected encounters but then ive never played walking dead, left4dead, dead island or any other of the glut of kill zombie shooters, id probably feel the same way if it were nazis say after the glut of WW2 shooters in recent history which i did play :)
