Has this game failed?
The Defiance discussion section seems to be filled with people who get angry the second anything bad is said about the game so i'll start of by saying that i really like this game so far.

The reason i'm wondering if it's failed is that there is only one server per region, as far as i'm aware, and there doesn't seem to be that many people. I can only speak for the EU servers but there doesn't seem to be many people, anywhere. Every so often you see 20-30 people at an arkfall but the map doesn't seem big enough for there to be thousands of people scattered all over it.

I might be wrong but the population seems to be pretty low.

I now know that the game uses single server tech which explains why it seemed so low.

It is a fail indeed, might have looked good on paper to them, but they did everything wrong during the developement process. those other peoples you might see at some very rare occasion are those who are still below the 10hours played time, where the game might still appear not so bad, those who have played more than 10hours are not in game, they are busy stating their disapointement toward Trion on the different forum and review site...

It has failed. And to show you how desperate the fanboi's are to defend this POS game, on the official forums they deny the Shadow War has a que. Yeah Right.....half the players didnt know there was a que they were all milling about wondering what the purple circle on the map was.
Oh and by the way, anyone who buys lock boxes with in game resources or real life money had better not bother. You get crap loot just like everywhere else in the game.

It hasn't failed yet. It might in the future. We don't know. It is meant to get beter as time passes and when every episode airs,

That's not true. I bought one with 64 keys, got an orange shotgun and a purple smg, both are really good. While using them i realised that despite almost all weapons having basicly the same stats there are still some good weapons. Too bad i've fully leveled them both now and no longer get weapon xp for them.

Like i said in my first post, i'm not talking about the gameplay or anything like that, just the number of people online. From the amount of people i've seen in-game my guess would be that around 3-4 thousand people own this game, if that, that seems like a failure. Although i guess the american sales could be a lot higher.

As far as population goes, Im pretty sure I read that they have multiple instances of the same map, so you may only see like 50 people at an arkfall , but there are duplicate instances with more people going on all the time.
As far as failing goes, It will need a constant flow of lots of content to keep people around. There isnt much reward to grind for (just outfits that I know of) once people finish the storyline.

It hasn't failed yet, but if they don't improve the rpgish aspects (loot and EGO skills being so pointless, no boss drops) it will I think.

They have some big patch coming and they show starts in a few days. They better do something cool.

Remember that its not cross platform play, so a good bit are on the consoles as well. While many of us would be diehard PC fans, 3rd person shooters are legitimately popular on consoles as well.

Also, I'm pretty sure the game does a fair bit of instancing, so for any given area that are multiple instances with people fighting in that (e.g. Iron Demon's Ranch has a phase with combat in it, but most of the time people are shopping there).

You do realize there are more than that playing on just Steam right? You can see it on the list.

Come on...

Also, many don't even use Steam because of the early release. I still don't run it through Steam.

I said in game many times, never mentioned steam once.

umm...they use single server technology. When you see few people around you its because they dumped you on a lesser populated server shard.

Depends when you log on and where your at. I see tons of people when im on, but if i log off and then back on, i typically get put on a shard with less people (unless a friend phases me to his shard and its packed)

Packed shards are fun for arkfalls, but it gets to the point on missions where you really are not doing anything since so many people are helping, yes the mobs do scale quite a bit with more people around.

If you asked forum posters, every mmo has failed...every single one. We all know thats not true.

People act like its politics with mmo games. Have to trash the other side, and try to convert players to your game. Best way to do that is to scare off as many people from playing as possible. Its sad really.

This games fun, youll get way more hours of gameplay (if you like TPS games) than a single player game that costs just as much. Thats ignoring the free content updates as well.

So far im enjoying it, more than i thought i would.

This makes sense then, wasn't aware of the server shard situation. Also i didn't really think about the fact that it was on consoles too, i guess as a MMO i just automatically think PC only.

What you said would explain the amount of people bad-mouthing Defiance before it was even released then.

The game does has many drawbacks, but I'm enjoying it thoroughly with about 40 hours or so played, I haven't even beaten the main missions yet
