I tried backing up my game, it deleted itself
I tried a backup, a message appeared saying I needed to verify the games cache. I did this, the game deleted itself and started downloading from 0%. Whe the hell, this is a joke.

Don't ever do a verify cache on games that have their own launchers. For RIFT and Defiance, you'll do your updating/repairing through their launchers, not through Steam.

that's really awful. They should fix this somehow...

I contacted Steam support and got some advice that worked. I didnt try the simple option which would be to just copy the Defiance game folder but this is what I did and it worked:

Windows XP/Vista/7

Completely exit the Steam client.
Open the run dialogue by pressing windows key and typing run
Type steam://flushconfig then press enter
Restart your computer
Now, launch Steam directly from the installation folder, not from a pre-existing shortcut (~C:\program files (x86)\Steam).
The Steam application will either appear as Steam or Steam.exe depending on whether your settings show file extensions
Copy the Steamapps folder located in your Steam installation directory (default location is: C:\Program Files\Steam\)
