paid for free to play?

just to make sure I'm not jumping to conclusions I bought this game back around the time it came out, I beat the short story line then quit. Now I'm debating comming back because I see a ton of dlc, so in short: did I pay full price for the base free to play game?

Base game is free to play, those that purchased got some benefits. Currently existing DLC is the only DLC - everything since the transition is free content updates (no more DLC).

what short story line?

back around the launch the main story line took me around 80 hours while getting side tracked (pretty short for a MMO)

You can always grab the season pass for dirt cheap at some reseller
But IMO the only dlc that is somewhat worth is Arkbreaker and Castithan the rest is kinda a waste of space.
