Gnomoria
Tips for new players
Here is a summery and answers of the problems I ran into.

My food will not produce.
About 24 days into the game there is a winter season and all throughout the winter season nothing will grow. Make sure you have enough food and drink to last the season. About 200 of each is enough. A large yak farm is a good way to get some emergency milk and sauage if it comes down to that. Having a large yak farm at the start of winter is a good idea. It will take about 20 days to get 12-14 yaks but it can be a life saver.

My workshops are not producing.
There are some factors that need to be considered if you want to have a workshop that has a lot of work to do.
First you have to have someone that is skilled enough to work it. Sometimes it seems that the gnoms will go idle and not want to work. You can create a general job role with all the roles selected and using that will assure yourself that there is someone that can take care of your needs.
Second, and this one got me for a while, make sure that the workshop storage space is not full. I became furstrated and thought that the game was bugged. You can do this by selecting the workshop and looking at the name bar. If it says (no room) then it is full. I say this becase I thought that I had enought storage space for 20 bed frames and matresess that were being built but what I didn't know is that cloth bolts are stored in crates and the only area I had set aside was full of bags which I was using to store the cotton. Straw is not stored in anything and is stacked in piles. When the bed frames was done I did not have a storage space set aside becuase I thought that I didn't need vvery many and any given time. Combine all of this and my woodcrafter was not producing anything and I deleted tasks and the wood worker and rebuilt them but it did not fix the issue. Clicking on the woodworker to delete the tasks again and that when I saw the (no room) at the top. I looked up what type of storage each of the items needed and the issue was solved. Now everything is working again.

Gnoms are just standing around getting killed.
If a gnom is not set as a millitary it will not fight. Besure that you have a fighting force.

Gnoms can't dig very deep becuase they starve.
having multiple exits from your mines is the only way I was able to prevent this. It is not a good solution but the only one that I have found.

My storage is filling up with junk.
Dirt, clippings, seeds, and things of the like you will have in abundence very quickly. The merchant will buy these from you. Not for much, With some items not for anything but it will clear out your storage letting you make room for more useful, or more valueable, items.

I hope these tips makes your gaming a little funner and you dont have to learn the hard/frustating way like I did.

Thanks to some of you guys in the community who helped me resolve a couple of these issues.

As per gnomes cant dig deep - what I've seen done is creating an "outpost" with food, drinks, and a small dormitory down near where the gnomes are mining. This seems to be a good strategy if not building a single long starcase into the depths.
Keldereck over at the official forums also has a great thread full of tips - check it out:

As cyber said, best way to deal with the miners is build beds + food/drink storage underground.

"Craft to" means that whenever that item falls below the set number more will be made. So setting wine on Craft to 50 means there will always be drinks.

Also dont make beer. The grain is better used for making sandwiches.
