They both play differently. They are inexpensive, and in a new emerging genre I enjoy so, I have and support both of them.
Go read some of the COPY of, CLONE of type threads... they are the longest threads in here so far.
Both Towns and Gnomoria get the "Clone of Dwarf Fortress" treatment which was indeed a big inspiration for both.... I don't want to say things that are already covered for many pages in other posts.
But if you don't like them, there's always the "Orchestral" music option. But personally I think this game was built for the awesome chiptunes. :D
Or, to put it in another perspective.
"Unreal is a copy of Quake!" No, they're both DOOM-Clones
More than one game can and will exist in any given genre, and that is a good thing. It gives us players more options, helps drive the development of the genre, and improves on the games that have come before.
I'll admit that chiptunes aren't to everyone's taste, personally I like them, that aside though, Gnomoria has just felt more polished, even in the earlier versions.
Only thing I've found annoying so far is that the Gnomes on my best map refused to drink anything but beer and died of thirst.
Odd fact in reply to Cirom, both Gnomoria and Starbound have the same artist and it's thanks to them that I got my first copy, (gift code from them, known them for a few years) I tried it, loved it and actually bought a copy to send some revenue towards the coder.
Yeah Rho is great. In my opinion at least.

Stonesense is way older the both games, and to be honest. I'm verry dissapointed that the copy
dwarf fortress Just to make money
Both Towns and Gnomoria look really different than stonesense
I like challenges so I read this a bunch of times.
