"Games where no one plays the same" = Sandbox games.
They're called that because there is no real end-goal except to survive and not lose, and they leave the requirements and end-goal up to the player and henceforth offer lots of replayability.
OpenTTD is an open-source rendition of Transport Tycoon Deluxe (old ms-dos game by Chris Sawyer), and is another good one, can be downloaded free with OpenGFX/SFX kit with it.
There are a whole lot of different games out there that fit the bill, including Towns, though I haven't heard so much good about Towns from many players as it needs more work.
I am a Dwarf Fortress Veteran and it is why I bought this game its like a graphical update to one of my favorite games. I haven't played this one enough to know if it is easier or not yet but I like it so far. Big question is--is there a game breaking danger room in this game?
No. One of the reasons why is probably because you don't make your own customly built "training room". However, there is a monster that can essentially self replicate, and you could "farm" them. The armor stat at the moment doesn't seem to level, I know that crossbow, sword, axe and dodge skills do though.
What I mean here, is, if you had a big cave, and hung around it alot, any dark spot with a floor tile can spawn a monster** (how often/how strong/% chance depends on difficulty chosen). Monsters also spawn on the surface at any map edge that has a floor tile.
If you leave caves dark (as sometimes it's hard to light them up well), you may end up with a monster fest. Some folks consider this way-fun, others want to just say words such as the ones we shouldn't mutter on the Steam forums. Too many 'trapped' or 'stuck' monsters can cause lag issues especially when you get down to -40 and below as they try to repeatedly path to you and fail, causing hitching. This shouldn't happen too many times though, but it can. Just something to keep an eye out for though [do not less this deter you, it is preventable and also fixable].
** Monsters may only be spawned within 16 unit radius of a gnome, on a dark tile, within a few floors distance of said gnome. Check for valid spawn areas with the END key, this toggle shows RED where cave monsters can spawn.
I have had monsters spawn 5 levels below my closest gnome, even though the wiki says 2 floors is the furthest down a monsters can spawn vertically from you.
The most challenge can ironically come from Zombies, as they can infect gnomes who upon dieing become zombies of ill-intent. Beetles can prove quite fierce and lethal in large numbers because they have tough exo-skeletons (like bronze armor in durability), and can reproduce given time. There is plenty of challenge to be had here to keep you on your toes, just a bit of looking for it is all it takes.
