Patches, Alpha etc.
So.. I'm a big fan of castle building simulator (or medieval cities) and I just want to ask if the game is still in Alpha or Beta and how frequent does the dev releases patches?

This game is far from finished. We just received an update that added Load/Save functions. The game is in Alpha (or at least that is my assumption) and just had a small beta test of the Load/Save functions that some of us participated in (the test was open to all who owned the game on steam already).

I don't use the terms for alpha and beta correctly, i know. I call the game an Alpha because it is far from complete. I'd say it was a beta if it was mostly done and just had bugs to fix here and there.

Also, i'm not one of the devs but that is my perception at this time. The game gets patches about every month (or thats how it seems since i got it). Future patches will likely break save games but when they get sandbox into the game i would imagine the saves will break less often. Right now it is just a Tutorial level. With Saving/Loading working correctly but there are still bugs throughout what the game has available at this time.

I just saw some threads saying "beta" so I thought its in beta state.

So they only got tutorial? :(

The game is in early alpha access. Atm there is one tutorial map you can play, its alot of fun but 90% of the content is still being worked on.

Very much looking forwrd to the Sandbox mode!

I have added the definitions we use of ALPHA and BETA to the end of the FAQ in response to this topic:

In the beta post for patch 0.1.7.0 there is a section at the top named 'Important' that includes a statement about not being the final beta.

Wait, so... there's been a "Beta patch" to the game, and yet save/load functionality was just added not long ago? That's stuff you do in an Alpha.

Seem to be a massive conflict in interpretation there. Everything I'm reading on these forums indicates the game is still firmly entrenched in the Alpha stages.

Betas are for bug hunting/fixing and final balancing, when a piece of software is feature complete. Seems like a *lot* of developers are trying to push early Betas that don't qualify as Betas, perhaps in an effort to get people purchasing and playing?

Game remains on my wishlist, though my level of skepticism has gone up.

It was a Beta Patch for the save/load function. The game is still very much in alpha, they (Games Foundry) made a Beta Patch for those that wished to test the patch of the save/load and help them find bugs to make the patch ready quicker. They explain in greater detail in the FAQ post above yours.

Hope this helps!

It does help, thank you C942. It is unfortunate they call a patch for software in Alpha a "Beta patch", which is highly misleading. Additionally I had to read to the end of that very long drawn out post to find out what stage the game was in - that should have been the very first paragraph.

Hopes remain high for the game, just not sure they're approaching it as openly as they should. Obfuscation is usually a sign of not wanting to be open about what is actually happening.

Curious, whats being obfuscated?

The fact that the game is still in Alpha. Patches for the Alpha are called "Beta patches". The clear "Game is in Alpha" statement is at the bottom of a very long status post most people wouldn't read all the way through.

Obfuscation is the art of hiding intended meaning, which is being done on more than one level as far as I can see. Had I not taken the time to dig for the actual truth of it, I would have assumed it was in Beta due to the lack of an easily identifiable statement, and the "Beta patch" tag.

Doesn't bother me, since my trust quotient is low with devs and publishers lately. I just wanted to find out actual status, and I have.

For future test versions of patches we'll refer to them as 'Test Builds' to avoid any confusion.

To continue our policy of transparency and communication, I've moved the alpha/beta definition to near the top of the FAQ and added a new answer addressing the current state of the game:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/224440/discussions/7/864971287484443052/

I have also renamed the pinned topic title to replace 'Beta' with 'Test Build', as well as the body of the OP.

Thanks for your feedback Jaga.

Good moves on both parts GF, you reclaim buyer confidence doing such things. Sorry if any of it came out negative, I was being more matter-of-fact than anything else.
