Time To Retire The Old Tutorial
Hi Folks,

The time has come to retire the old tutorial from the game. It's long been cumbersome for the dev team, adding several hours to the testing time for each build, and requiring us to maintain 2 code bases. Swapping from the old controls to the new sandbox controls can be confusing for players, and sandbox has moved way beyond what was in the old tutorial. Finally there's the quality issue. As we all know the tutorial is archaic and bug ridden, and it needs to die.

Fans of the old tutorial will still be able to play via a new beta opt-in build called 'oldtutorial'. If you want to play it, please follow the steps below:

1. Right click on Folk Tale in your Steam Library and choose Properties
2. On the 4th tab 'Betas', change the dropdown to 'oldtutorial'
3. Click Close and wait for Steam to update
4. Don't forget to opt-out of this build when you are finished, otherwise you won't receive the main public patches.

Work on the RPG elements of gameplay (including storyline and questing) are progressing well, and we should have something playable in the coming months to fill the void left by the removal of the old tutorial. I'll be talking more about the RPG aspect starting in March.

And for the benefit of those who don't visit us too often or read the dev blogs:

Campaign is not dead. Storyline, questing and humour can sit quite happily within the sandbox framework we have once the Quest Designer is in place. Now that Load/Save is finished, it's next on the task list.

Is it wrong to feel happy about this? it felt like it caused more dramas than anything while it existed.

Certainly Aron (lead programmer) and I did a little dance. The rest of the team are still asleep so are yet to wake to the news.

I agree, but don't forget to update the Early Access box!
Also, you could have a link in the main menu which leads to the Getting Started guide, I find it very well written.

Man I didn't know you still tested it every time for an update. I thought it was no longer really supported at this point since it is pretty much a whole different game (code wise).

It's good to see that you are getting rid of this weight slowing down development. I think this is good decision.

Yeah, no doubt. I didn't realize it was that much of an albatross for them to be lugging about for each patch. Definitely time to cut the chaff. ;)
