So I recomend to every one to play the Ys 2 and to not expend your money with Ys 1
Both comes together though, no?
Ys I was hard. I'm surprised I only used a walkthrough once and it was to open the last door to the last boss. I never though about going back to that npc after saving the girl. Call me crazy, but I don't regret playing it. Sure, it was cheap at certain moments, but I still had fun overall and it got me used to the bump system, to enjoy II better.
I'd still recommend playing through Ys I even if it's hard and cheap, to better understand the story. I haven't beaten Ys II yet, but it is much better than the first(better balance imo) and the introduction of spells was nice. Though so far, I've found myself using a walkthrough multiple times already because either I got lazy or I simply couldn't find the damn thing.
Well, that's how I felt on my first playthrough on normal. If I were to replay, I probably wouldn't feel the same as I've already defeated all of the bosses before. But, by cheap, I'm not talking about the bosses only. There's also character leveling, the rings and some part of the story(event triggers).
I don't like how there's only 10 levels and each level gives you a big 15 points HP, Attack and Defense. Ys II did this so much better with 5 HP and 3 Attack/Defense. I'd call this cheap, because you just need to level once and bam you overpower the content, until the bat boss anyway, because even at level 10 and silver gears, you only deal like 8% of his HP per attack if I remember correctly.
Not to mention double damage dealt or half damage received ring. Though, did these rings even work? At first I've had the half damage received ring for a good while, atleast 75% of my playtime. But when I got to the bat boss, I've had the double damage dealt ring until the very end, but I didn't seem to take more damages. I'd also call these rings cheap if they actually worked.
About event triggers, one comes to my mind especially. After defeating the bat boss, you find a door with 2 pedestal, yet this isn't even used for anything? Anyway, you go back to Jeba's town(3rd town, I forgot the name of the towns) and from then, I had no idea what to do. Feena was near the water and Jeba was in her house, that's as much as I remember about the important characters, I refused to use a walkthrough, so I went on and talked to every single NPCs from the 3 towns, however I'm learned nothing important or new. But wait! Despite nothing important or new learned, Feena finally moved inside with Jeba and then I finally could enter Darm Tower. But then again, it's an old game.
Though, thinking about it again, back to being bothered as to why they even put the 2 pedestal and that door in the game. fff
Feel free to correct me if I missed something about this and that^
As for Dark Fact, once I figured out I needed Silver gears to beat him, he was fine. Well, that and realising that he only removes tiles as his HP gets lowers(or seemed to) helped a bit.
I think the hardest boss for me was the first boss. That's the boss I've died the most on. Each of my hit would hit around 4% of his HP and with these flame turrets, yeah.. I fixed that by leveling once and buying the next sword, then I 3 shot him. If that isn't cheap..
As for Jenocles, the first boss, having the long sword is necessary yes, but you don't need to power level to defeat him, being level 4 is enough and you can get there with minimal grinding if you know about the golden vase (which gives enough for the long sword) and the sidequest to save Lute Gemma's life (one of the women in Zepik says her husband is missing, if you find out where he is and trigger the event where you have to save him, you instantly get to level 3 if you didn't fight anything).
Fighting Jenocles is all about looking at the fire's timing against his teleport's timing and going in when he's about to teleport in while the flames are dying down, he teleports faster as his hp goes down, but the battle is all about patience and timing.
The rings don't work during boss fights exactly because they'd be cheap, you'd be killing the bosses in Darm tower almost instantly if you could use the power ring.
I actually like that the level cap is 10, grinding becomes completely unnecessary once you hit it so you can focus more on finding the items you need while trying to avoid enemies and getting to the next boss, it also means that you can't get through a boss through gaining a level alone as you've mentioned, you need to actually think about how to defeat said boss. More focus on the adventure and less on making sure you're at high enough a level to stand a chance, something that can actually happen in a few other Ys games.
As for the lack of directions, that's very much because of what you've said; it's old, and the remakes are still rather faithful in quite a few ways to the originals, they're more of a straight update than, say, going from Ys IV: Mask of the Sun/Dawn of Ys to Ys: Memories of Celceta.
I like Ys 1 better because of these things, I do realize that Ys 2 is the better game overall though, but I wouldn't call Ys 1 cheap, I think 2 is actually "cheaper" on account that easily spammable homing fireballs make most of the enemies trivial outside of bosses, they consume so little mp that you're not likely to ever run out, and only a few enemies are immune to them.
Anyway, you could try the TurboGrafx16 version of Ys 1 and 2, the level cap is 35 if I remember right, and when you defeat Dark Fact you go straight into Ys 2 starting at that level, they're played out more as a single game instead of a two parter.
Rings do not affect bosses at all for Ys I. When I say this game is cheap on nightmare, I am talking about stuff changed or unique to that difficulty. Stuff that is static is a sperate discusion. Which there are a few like you posted about.
Hot Tramp can you share you profile enough so people can see how many hours you put into YsI and your achivements for it. If you wish to replay the game on nightmare showing all your atempts on the mirror room boss that would be good too.
Yeah, I've got him to nearly half once or twice when my damages were tickling only. Personally, I thought it was kinda lame how you could just sit here and he would never hit you.
I prefer Ys II approach to leveling. Less stats per level, higher level cap.
I can't comment too much about it yet though, as I don't know if one will naturally cap by going through the story without or with minimal grinding. I didn't beat the game yet and I did grind a bit(I got the max gold achievement yesterday).
Oh yeah, I admit about the fireballs. Though, I've never used fireballs outside of boss battles(beside for the ice spikes on the ground in one of the caves in the ice ridge and when I first obtained it).
Sorry for derailing the topic.
The fireball spell is very powerful with either of the two homing rings. First one just adds a homing feature and the second massively boosts the spells damage.
You can get max level easy enough if your getting the achievement for unlocking all the monster book entries. I was 55(max) for the last boss in Ys 2, and it was not to bad. With the 60k revive item you get two hp bars and two mp bars of a damage shield spell. As long as your into the second phase before the revive item is used, you should be ok. Took me like three tries total.
I remember Ys1 back on the TurboGrafx-16, not being as hard on most of the bosses, with the game set at max difficulty. The spinning orbs around the mirror room boss were much much slower, for instance.

Was playing a little lousy but here ya go. I'm not sure why I'd have to prove myself, but whatever.
As for my profile, I'd rather keep it private.
Note I played this game quite a bit on PSP before PC.

This is the closest I got to beating Dark Fact on Nightmare
http://imgur.com/laptXss
Anyways, since I have a very limited playtime (spring semester starting up next week), I decided to jump right into Nightmare mode on Y's II, I've only just started though. But the diagnal bump attack is helping :)
They don't go after you they just bounce around waiting to be killed. Also I don't understand who had the brilliant idea of making the fight easier the more you damage him... As soon as the crystals start dissappearing all you have to do is backpedal after you hit and there's no way you get hit...
Personally I had a great time with Ys I... until the final fight. Everything, bat boss included, was quite enjoyable, and you only need some practice to get through.
On the other hand, Dark Fact was a truly awful experience. I got through the whole game in one or two sittings, and then I got stuck with this guy for two days, forcing myself to replay the damn fight at least 40 minutes a day until he finally decided to die.
In my opinion it was a very sad ending for a very good game, and the main reason I will never replay it. Of course YsII is much better in almost all aspects, except the MP system that allows for infinite fireballs, these games come from a time when developers made an effort to create worthy sequels... but that doesn't make Ys I a bad game.
Are there unique changes when we compare Normal to Hard? If so, how cheap?
(I usually don't bother with normal difficulties if Hard is accessible in the beginning.)
