It's in the Subterranean Canal, under the city. I'm not sure exactly where, but you can check this page on GameFAQs to guide you: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/979864-ys-i-and-ii-chronicles/faqs/66645?page=3#section227 (scroll down to the Subterranean Canal section just before Boss Battle #04)

Kill the bats with fire, are you playing nightmare mode or something?

I'm stuck on this boss as well. I can barely kill all the bats and when I manage to I only survive her spewing fire for roughly 5 seconds before dying.

Any tips? I didn't have this much trouble in the first Ys, except the last boss :D.

What is your level and equipment? If you're not already, you'll want to be at least level 45 with the Battle Sword to do decent damage (though a couple more levels certainly wouldn't hurt), and preferably the Battle Shield and Armor for defense. I'd also recommend equipping the Falcon Idol for this fight, since doing charged shots with that will create a few smaller homing fireballs upon impact, which should help with damage output, as well as (hopefully) crowd control with the bats.

Thanks for the advice, I guess I'll try levelling more as I think I've done / am doing all the others. I believe I'm only level 37...

37? Sweet Reah, man, you've been avoiding a lot of monsters! Don't rely so much on the Roo transform.

Zava's 44, and Ys games tend to inflate damage numbers based on level discrepancy. So yeah, you'll probably want to at least match level with that one Zavanite in Mesa's sector (42). It also inflates XP gain if you're under level, so you'll get the first couple levels against it very quickly.

For the rest of the game, consider using the Roo staff to set up attacks against monsters instead of avoiding them. Approach them in disguise, then when you line up a good off-center attack, drop the disguise and ram them into a wall. You'll find yourself very, very rarely in need of grinding if you kill things regularly, especially with as often as this game makes you backtrack.

Yeah, generally, you'll want to be at least the same level as the bosses. Problem is, you can't really know that kind of info beforehand without consulting a guide or something (and before anyone mentions it, that mini-portrait of Zava that one can see with the Beastiary Potion references her "normal" form, which was actually able to be killed off in an earlier version of the game, but was fixed in later versions, including this one).

Anyway, level 44 is the bare minimum for dealing any extra damage to Zava or her bats, but it's still a pretty drawn out fight. Even though there are Zavanites present during this boss fight, it seems like their stats are linked to Zava's in this case, as level 42 (the level of ordinary Zavanites) isn't enough to shorten the fight whatsoever.

Haha that was off the top of my head. I was 45 IIRC, I levelled to 48 then beat her and the game last night.

To be honest, I was wondering how you made it to the last phase of the fight at level 37. =p Getting that far at such a level or lower is quite time-consuming and challenging. Even just one of those bats takes way too long to deal with at level 43 or lower, let alone 9.

Anyway, congrats on finishing. :)

I killed everything in site, I was 49 a few hundred to 50 I sweeped like 2 or 3 times through the guys in front of the boss fight and got it in no time. At 50 I still had like 75% of my health after killing her, was really disappointing. I was on Hard though, not Nightmare.
