Ys I

Unable to play Ys I.
So, no matter what I try, no matter what graphics settings I change I'm unable to play Ys I. It gives the appearance of starting up, but then gives me the error message "DirectX initialization failed." However, I'm able to start up and play Ys II just fine. Any ideas at all that might help?

Have you already tried verifying the integrity of the game's cache? If not, try that first. Every now and then I solve weird issues on Steam that way. Right click on the game in Steam, click on properties, then the Local Files tab, and finally "Verify integrity of game cache."

Unfortunately, that didn't work. Wierdly enough, the first time I tried to do it, it wouldn't start verifying, even after waiting a few minutes. I had to reinstall the entire game for it to even go.
Thanks for the tip, even if it couldn't be used.

Not sure if this will help at all, but did work for me with another game where it wouldn't start.

Go into your Ys I folder. In Windows 7 for the the folder I'm speaking of is in program files (x86)>steam>steamapps>common>Ys I. Then in there go to the dxredist folder and double click on DXSETUP.EXE. That will run through the Direct X 9.0 setup again and should hopefully fix this.

Hm, well I hope someone can solve your issue. It's a great game!

Oh right, you could try running the game in administrator mode, or running Steam in administrator mode, or both! I don't see why it would work when Ys II is already working without enabling that, but it's worth a shot, right?

Oh my goodness. I litterally yelled "WHAT IS THIS," out loud when running Steam as admin let me play it. I've been trying to play Ys I since it came out and THAT is what let me play?
Well. Whatever. Thank you very very much for basically keeping me from going insane trying to figure it out. Indeed, it was worth the shot. Eheheh.

Wow! Glad it worked for someone! How bizarre. A shame it doesn't work for everyone.

Ya, I've tried everything on this list and am also unable to play =3= Nothing suggested on this forum has worked for me, sadly. What's weird, is I already played it for a time a few days ago. When at home, I connect my lap top to my TV. Could this have anything to do with running the initial set up while I was connected to the TV?

go to your steamlibrary/steamapps/common/Ys I/dxredist and run DXSETUP.

I hope this helps, because it worked for me.

Ya, I did that too. Twice. And reset my compy to make sure. It's not very effective v.v

Update for me: It works. ONLY when I have it plugged into my TV that I initially launched it through with the HDMI cable. If I try to run it through just the standard laptop monitor, it gives the DirectX error. It looks great on the TV, but the point of a laptop is portability....

Just curious, did you install Steam to a place like Program Files that usually requires admin privileges to modify?

Wow. This is a year-old thread. How nostalgic.
To answer your question, yes it is in Program Files.
