Should I buy this game?
Not sure if I should buy the game but at this sale price I'm interested.

Same question. Also, is it turn-based combat like the original Final Fantasy games?

Absolutely, it's a very good game easily worth that price.

No, combat is more Zelda-like, but not quite. It's good once you get used to it, but it is rather strange.

I need the Ys origins to play this one?

No. I myself started from Origins, but I think it's better to play this first. You'll understand Origins' plot just fine without it, but there will be some small references you'll be missing on.

it has bump combat and it is also widely considered a masterpiece

as for continuity: I can be done before 0 (and i almost recommend it), but II before 0 will cause spoilers for 0 but not vice versa

This game might turn you off from the Ys series if you don't like the old school bump system. Check out some YouTube videos to get a sense of how it'll be.
I'd recommend playing Ys Origins or Ys The Oath in Felghana because I think those are, overall, better games. If you wait, you might be able to find either of those two on sale for 75% soon.

I have been eyeing the Ys series for a little while - had them on my wishlist anyhow. Yeah they are cheap and you are getting 2 games for almost nothing. They look good so why pass them up?

Yes these 2 are the older games, where as origins and oath in felghana are newer and probably better. I am hoping to get those on a flash sale too. If not they are on a sale now anyhow and for a while so I might still get them if I like I and 2 enough.

I agree with this - I bought Ys I + II fully aware of what I might be getting into, because I wanted to get a sense for where the series began after playing Oath and Origin. In Ys I it is very possible to get lost as to what to do next, miss out on an optional item, or become disgusted at the cruelty of boss battles (Vagullion, anyone?) given Adol's laughable frailty thanks to the bump system.

Origin and The Oath in Felghana are both far more linear, as well as far more accessible, more akin to other action RPGs you might be used to.

Tangentially, if you happen to own a PS Vita, Memories of Celceta is awesome. Can't recommend it enough.

Alright, I bought the game. Thanks for your suggestions everyone!

The one review I read made the pacing seem quite off. Not qutie sure how far along it is, but the player is max'ed out in level and gold, so there is no reason to fight. So you run past most of the stuff just to get to the end, and do the boss fights.

Imo ys 1 and 2 are some of the finest games i've ever played, the combat is really unique yet simple and it keeps a good level of difficulty. The plot is standard adventure plot, but its still pretty good. Getting these two games for $3 is a good purchase decision, you guys should totally pick it up.

What is the chance of these games getting bundled?
I mean, in a Humble Bundle or something...
bk3000 Dec 24, 2013 @ 12:03am
No idea. I have bought games only to see them in a bundle later but not a big deal they're so cheap anyhow. I'm not going to not buy a game because it MIGHT be in a bundle eventually. Any game could be technically.

Yeah... I know. But still hurts me.. ;p (specially when it gets bundled a week later)
I have the other Ys here, still wondering about this one...

Edit: well dammit... couldn't resist. :)
