Really bummed about [plot spoiler].
I've been playing Ys all morning, and I've just come back from the shrine with a book of Ys for Sara. I was genuinely surprised -- and actually pretty bummed out -- to discover that Sara had been murdered while I was away (that's right, I'm spoiler tagging plot details from a 26 year old game).

The fact that this plot development upset me at all is a testament to just how charming the game is. She literally had one scene prior to her off-screen demise, and yet I was like "Dude, not cool!"

Been a while since an old-school RPG with very little story moved me at all. Kind of a nice surprise.

I actually felt the opposite, Sara didn't do anything to make me care about her so felt nothing. Although coming into the house to have a guy say, "Sorry, Sara was murdered. Goodbye." was interesting. Then you just leave. And it only takes 20 seconds to go back outside and continue, so it made it seem like nothing had happened. She even leaves a note for you that says to just keep getting the books, as if her death doesn't matter.

That's why I found it odd that it did effect me, because the reaction you had is the reaction I should have had. I can't put my finger on why, but it actually bummed me out quite a bit. Maybe because I was expecting to get to know the character a little, and then BAM. Gone.
if that bummed you out then dont play Ys Origin lol. or play them all cause i highly recommend them!

When I played this back in the 80s, her death did impact me also. Well, not in the sense that I sat down and cried, but pretty much the same reaction: "Whaaat? Why did this happen?"

I remember that a part of this is because I spent a long time playing the game before getting to that part, since even this game had a longer feel to it before. Going through that dungeon several times, checking back with Sara and her mom to make sure I'm going through the right direction -- Sara was a character that lasted longer than she probably should have because I didn't progress the story as fast.

I find that a lot of these older games and anime videos are like that -- newer generation didn't get the same impact because they didn't spent such a long time watching it or playing it. Consider it like the case that before there was a sequel, or so many options of gaming, we stuck with these games over and over and over again -- before the sequel came out or remakes we remade be easier.

The story in this game didn't have any effect on me -- and I first played it on the Wii. Terranigma and Lufia 2, which I played not too long after on the other hand were highly memorable. Still, there are things I like about Ys such as the music and it was one of the earlier console games to have voice acting.

Spoilers dude. Please,
Edit: My bad, saw this as a tile on the main discussion board, didn't see the title.
Edit 2: Fk steam for not having a Spoilers and Block Spoilers option on their discussion boards.

As far as I am concerned, it's one of these cases where I feel that it's both a good and a bad thing.

The game didn't allow the player to get to know her at all, so there was not really any attachment to the character yet. However, that's also exactly what's good and bad about it. It felt like the game stole away something you took for granted (a character you'd get to learn more about). It stole away a potentially attaching character, who could have had much more impact had she lived. It made me want to have known her more. But that was stolen away before it could get there.

And that is why her death ends up affecting me.

I think you hit it right on the head, Holy. That's why it effected me, too.

I'm planning to pick up the Ys I and II Anime on DVD next month. I wonder how much screen time her characters gets in that?

Riven, sorry about that. I wasn't ware the post would show up in tiles like that, I don't do a lot on the Steam community here so I thought the spoiler tag in the title would have been sufficient.
