Warning: Disliking this game is punishable by death.
Methods of execution include being forced to take part in a "lottery" by Caesar's Legion, viciously mauled by a literal pack of Deathclaws, swarmed by poisonous Cazadores, or being thrown off Hoover Dam. Fun!
So take the superb writers and designers who were behind the original two Fallout games (who also did other great RPG's like Planescape: Torment and KOTOR 2) and mix it with the gameplay of Bethesda's Fallout 3. The result is a game that, at first, is a bit annoyingly linear, but opens up later once you eventually find your way into New Vegas itself. But you also get a game that is overflowing with sidequests, dark humor, and neat little bonuses found all over the world much as you would in Fallout 2. In fact, there is so much to do here I am not positive I've actually seen everything there is to see in this game despite having 100% completed it.
Obsidian, of course, is a developer that is rather infamous for bugs in their games, and there are some to be found here as well. As usual, save early and save often just in case something breaks or crashes, but usually that won't happen too often. It will probably happen more if you fill this game with mods like I and many others love to do, but that's something you will have to accept because mods make this already great game even bigger and better.
So if you like the Fallout series, you... probably have already played this, actually. If you haven't, then you should. Otherwise you too might find yourself digging a shallow grave in the middle of the Mojave desert. o_o
