Fallout New Vegas is indisputably a prodigious RPG, being considered one of the best RPG’s of all time (31-07-14 – PC Gamer). The game clearly doesn’t comprise a riveting storyline like other copious RPG’s, such as The Witcher II. Primarily, the game focuses on freedom and overwhelming expansiveness to impact the player. Yes, it does focus on quantity over quality; however the DLC does supplement the base game's storyline. With that con in mind, it doesn’t sojourn the game from being a remarkable and memorable experience.
Fallout New Vegas provides the gamer with an enormous open world to explore. Even though the map itself is not huge, the vast number of varied locations gives it an effect of vastness. Additionally, if you purchase the Ultimate edition a plethora of diverse terrains lay at your disposal through the satisfying DLC.
The vast abundance of character customization is a subliminal greatness to the game, with a single perk being made available every second level. These perks assist users to construct their character to their specific gaming style, additionally, when applied correctly the perks benefits can be used to your advantage significantly.
Fallout New Vegas is entirely inhabited by weaponry, allowing players to mod and test various weapons from the humble 9mm pistol to the profound .50MG Anti Material Rifle (.50MG recommended for killing deathclaws). After elongated periods of usage, weapons begin to breakdown, forcing the player to repair their weapons with parts from existing ones or constructed weapon repair kits. Note: Jury Rigger perk should be taken to decrease the negative implications of weapon repair, as similar weapons (not exact) can be used for repair.
Fallout New Vegas permits you to complete the main storyline in four key ways:
No Masters – take over the Mojave yourself.
NCR – supporting those who serve under the two headed bear - considered the next step for humanity (good karma)
Caesar’s Legion – supporting those who serve under the flag of the 86 tribes. Crushing the weak and building a community of slaves (bad karma)
Mr House – money is everything.
With consideration of the games release 23-10-10, the modding community sill impacts the game majorly. Furthermore, mods deliver diverse experiences and expand the permanence of the game. Mods can abolish the PC’s lack of graphical improvement and add additional lore, companions, quests and environments.
Hardcore mode tries to simulate realism, with hardcore mode utilising dehydration, starvation, weight and severity of wounds. For gamers seeking a true gaming experience and challenge hardcore mode is advised.
The Fallout New Vegas community is dedicated and constantly works to add high value to this already abundant game. Steam workshop is a mere simple addition to provide easy and swift mod installation, also in the steam tools section GECK consents you to create your own mods.
Fallout New Vegas isn’t the most demanding specs wise, meaning the game is rather easy to run. However, there is a downfall with the game being non-demanding, graphical improvement without mods is trifling.
Crashes will unfortunately happen to all players sporadically, and requires the player to reset from his or her previous save which could be a foremost dilemma in some circumstances although this is mostly negated by the ability to flash save at any time.
Forgiving the occasional crashes, Fallout New Vegas comprises Navmesh. Nevertheless, Navmesh doesn’t have a stout influence, with NPC’s walking through each other and through furniture.
+ 100 hours of single playthrough gameplay.
+ Mod Philosophy, which adds more core value to the game as an entire community.
+ Thought out perk system.
+ Replayability is exceptionally high due to the diversity of mods and storyline choices.
+ NPC interactions are dissimilar and your playstyle can regulate how you approach conversations with different dialogue options.
+ Environments are constructed strategically to match the wasteland appeal.
+ Wide array of weapons for entertainment.
+ The PipBoy is a fascinating and enticing form of loot sorting and menu scrolling.
+ Karma system affects how you are viewed, invoking fear, anger, respect etc.
+ Crafting and cooking is slightly clunky but adds much more additional content.
+ Because the game is a PC port, controller support is outstanding.
- Minor environmental blemishes.
- Monotonous interiors.
- NPC’s facial expressions aren’t the best; consider them a step between Fallout 3 and Skyrim.
- Weapon ranking should be bound to usage like Skyrim.
- Due to the expansive freedom of the game, the experience isn’t consistently exciting.
- Third Person isn’t perfected and is merely added for minor incentives.
What version of the game should I purchase?
Well it is up to you. Personally, the ultimate edition is the wiser choice as the game itself is vast and filled with a plethora of things to do. However, purchasing the ultimate edition for an extra $5 over the original price of $14.99 is well worth your money. The DLC merely tops off the cake with a sweet icing. Yes, the DLC has been given an unbiased quantity of criticism but if you overlook the downfalls the experiences are most memorable. Especially, the final cuts screening how your actions effect the land and people, also the importance of being a courier and why you have impacted New Vegas so meaningfully.
Conclusively, Fallout New Vegas suffices for any FPS fan and will be particularly esteemed amongst the RPG gamers. The vastness of the Mojave wasteland will entail you in an ambitious exploration filled with lore, quests, factions, environments, weaponry and mods. For an additional $5, 16 hours of somewhat exciting and fresh gameplay is given to you.
Seriously, a phenomenal experience 9.4/10 – Philosophical Gamer
Mods can disrupt the storyline, also mods can conflict, and so attempt finding out what will be conflicted before installing the mod, due to several mods requiring DLC.
In the Steam tools section the GECK tools allows you to manufacture your own mods
