I got so many and mixed feelings for this game. Fallout 3 was mindblowngly good and I had some expectations from New Vegas. I knew it couldn't look like a major AAA title release if it stood in front of FO3, but I was expecting more.
Allow me to make things as simple as I can.
✔ Loved finding interesting places in the map while scavenging. You can find useful stuff in every corner. There's some attention to the detail in a few settings, like finding hideouts and lookout points that made you feel that someone indeed lived and died there some time ago.
✔ Relived the glorious Fallout environment. I enjoyed it, I felt all that overdose of nostalgia left inside me ever since I played FO3.
✔ Tribal, racial, community differences. Man I loved exploring them, finding out their background stories. Deciding their future. We need more of that!
✔ Side quests with story impact. You know I'm not talking about how one can change a game's ending. But more like how NPCs treat you and talk to you, the way they appreciate you or hate you depending your actions and quests and decisions. i really enjoyed it. it made me feel that what I did mattered, it helped me get into character. It felt like an actually successful RPG element
✔ Crafting. ♥♥♥♥ yeah crafting and disassembling stuff rules!
✔ Mods. No need to same more. Blow your brains out with tons of them.
✖ Terribly limited. One can literally learn byheart every corner of the map. You can literally use and craft every single piece of material in the game in much less time than you could in FO3 or in any elder scrolls game. WTF? Why so small? This game was out as a stand alone title, full priced and with DLCs. There's no excuse to give players such a limited world to roam in!
✖ Endless desert. What's up with that? Too bored to design different environments?
✖ Cowboy cult. No need to say more.
✖ Buggy. It unfortunately still is. My latest example is that my first main character got bugged into a female voice somewhere near the end. Even some NPCs greeted me as a woman lol
✖ Uninteresting story, FO-wise. Nothing memorable to it. No big scale ideals. No massive plans. Just a small story about taking over New Vegas under a power of your choice and a war of hardly 50 NPCs scale.
You can literally speedrun the main quest in 2 hours without spending one single bullet and finish it at level 7 or 8.
☢ There were some little graphical improvements done here. I loved the physics from body animations and face expressions. There were tiny bit gore details added when it comes to body dismemberment. Though the rest of the whole game felt exactly the same with FO3. Same engine, same environmental effects and physical geometrical interactions.
☢ The voice acting was so carefully done for so many named characters. However the generic onelined greeting and goodbyeing was ridiculously off. For example you could speak to Melissa Watkins in the Brotherhood of Steel, who is designed to have the voice of a young girl, and there was no way in freakin hell you wouldn't miss that different deep mature female voice saying "hello" or "goodbye".
☢ Music. To put it simply; I enjoyed the way all levels and moments were designed to much a musical background, the way only Bethesda knows how to introduce, but there's absolutely nothing memorable to it. There's simply no OST value.
☢ DLCs. Gun Runners’ Arsena and Courier’s Stash should had been given to players at RELEASE and not make then pay extra for them. Also in the rest of DLCs introduced there are major environmental designs showoffs. I REALLY enjoyed most of my DLC gameplay (well except the proximity deaths in Dead Money) but they all left me with the taste of unsatisfaction. They could only make nature and massive city designs just for the DLC? Why? Did the developers got too bored to give us that awesome design concept in the main game so they went on to demo-introduce it to us in tiny short bits of experiences? This is not what I would expect to happen in FO4. They better use the information they got from feedbacks to make an awesome job for the next title! Environment is one of the keys of success for this franchise!!
☢ 100% game completion including quests and achievements is more like a chore than a unique experience. After 245 hrs on record in this game, I can safely say as much.
My fellow Fallout fans. I'm a fan of the franchise too. But we need more than that in our games.
FO:NV is an example of trying to juice out money from the pockets of a crowd that begs for new content.
When Bethesda can prove to make wonders just like how FO:3 turned out, we need to expect nothing less than more major game releases with great improvements. Not modified versions of a previous title with a different story-to-be-told shoved in it and push it out the market to make more money.
I'm giving Fallout: New Vegas a 6/10. It would had been an 8 or a 9 if they were more inovative with environmental designs. And it could easily drop down to 4 or 5 for all the reasons regarding lazy money making titles.
It made me feel that I played a slightly above average game. It left me with tons of mixed feelings.
I hope the next title will blow our minds off like FO3 did.
