Fallout 3/New Vegas Crash Fix/Reduction: Windows 7
I'm a huge Fallout fan, I was looking forward to playing 3 and New Vegas on my Laptop, cause I've put in a lot of hours on my Xbox 360 versions. However, I use Windows 7, I bet a lot of you do.

First time around, trying to play New Vegas, I crashed after about 10 minutes of gameplay, or I would freeze. It really ticked me off, and I gave up after a while. That was till a close friend of mine got Fallout 3 and New Vegas for himself, and also uses Windows 7. Fallout 3 was giving him problems, so I decided to look into it more.

Turns out there is an .ini fix that will help with the crashing for Windows 7 users. It may not fix it entirely, but it does help the crashing occur less often. And this fix also works for New Vegas. It worked for me and my friend.

What you've gotta do is go to Documents > My Games > Fallout3 (or FalloutNV for New Vegas)

Find the .ini file in the folders. There's one called FalloutPrefs and one called Fallout. Open the one named Fallout in note pad. Before you do that, be sure to right click the file, go to Properties, and uncheck Read Only, or else you won't be able to save it.

Now in the .ini file, press Ctrl+F and search for bUseThreadedAI. Once you find it you'll see is says bUseThreadedAI=0. Change that to bUseThreadedAI=1.

Press Ctrl+F again, and find [General]. Create a new line and add, iNumHWThreads=2.

Now save it. Right click the file again, click on Properties and re-check Read Only, so Steam doesn't save over it. And you should be done.

Like I said, it may not fix the crashes entirely. But it does help them occur less often.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask me. I hope I was able to help. Give thanks to my close friend too, he helped me out when I got a little confused.

This is a well known fix for FO3 but I never had an issue running NV on a quad core before
This fix has solved my crashing problem in FNV on Windows 7.

This game used to drop me to desktop about every third area I'd go into. Usually after my game gets on in progress quite a bit. It would just start crashing more and more.

This fix worked for me. Thanks a million for the info.
This Works Somewhat for me too. However the game corrupts itself and even if you tick the "read only" Steam will replace that whole file , so I am saving a copy of that file to use later.
Where in [General] should iNumHWThreads go? Begining, end, or after bUseThreadedAI?
@SEVENTEENPOINT1 I would try putting it after the last line in [General]. Make a new line and put iNumHQThreads=2.
Weird I have no problems on Windows 7 with neíther NV nor FO3 with my Hexacore.
I have the problem with NV whenever I leave Doc Mitchell's house it crashes. Tried this and many other solutions, but none have worked. Specs below

Windows 8
8GB DDR3
i7 quad core 2.2 GHz
Intel HD 4000
I'll have to try this when I get home.

I'll get a CTD occasionally, but usually the game will simply stall out on loading a new area (especially around Freeside).

I keep Process Explorer up on a second monitor, and the CPU usage for New Vegas will drop to 0% and stay there. I have to kill the game, otherwise it will just sit on the loading screen.

The weird part is when I reload. I'll use "continue" and the game will stall. I have to use "load" to start the game. The next time the issue occurs, I'll use "load" and the game will stall. Then I have to use "continue" to load the game.

Ah, the joys of PC gaming. :D:
I have no problems and im playing with windows 7.
Specs:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20 GHz
Installed Memory (RAM) 6GB
64 Bit opperating system.
I do not get any more crashes but my computer sometimes goes out of the game and goes to desktop, but the game still runs and I can just click on it on the task bar and I am right where I left off.
I have a Intel Core i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50 GHz Duel Core with 4GB of Memory and a 64 Bit Windows 7 OS.
now FalloutNV works perfectly. in 70 hours just closed the game once time. Thx

Did all this, also tried a whole lot of other things, giving up on this game. Still randomly crashing around 10-30 minutes in.
