Yeah, that guy's got an amazing setup. Beats the Warthog for heli flying that's for sure.

Flaming Cliffs...so want.

im just gonna stick with track ir and save up for 3 touch screens to put the cockpit of a-10c or anything on :)

Great stuff

I recently bought an Oculus Rift developers kit. I have also been a Track IR owner for years. In my opinion go with the Track IR. The max resolution on the Rift is only 1280x768. They say it will get higher but for now it is lacking. You can't use it and wear glasses. They give some separate lens for people with glasses but they severely limit your field of view. Head tracking with the rift is 1:1 so if you want to look behind you have to literally twist around in your chair to look behind you. No way to magnify your movements with the rift like the Track IR. In my opinion if your looking for immersion Track IR with three monitors (my current setup) is more immersing than the Rift.

I did like the authors cockpit setup. Cool stuff.

Wow, that looked pretty amazing. I would've never realized the pretty obvious idea that with advanced tech (Oculus Rift) anyone will be able to get their virtual pilot license and be able to fly something that actually resembles something close to real life from their living room.

The video also answered some questions I had about the Huey since I might want to pick it up.

Sorry about bumping an old thread, but the video seems like a must see.

The resolution is a deal breaker. I think the rift is something you have to "try on" before you buy. I'd want to know how heavy/bulky it feels, and how long I might be able to wear it. It is a great idea though.

The Oculus Rift Dev version 2 is going to be demo'd with DCS at the upcoming ITEC 2014 show. The updated resolution and 6DOF tracking have great potential.

Oculus Rift DK2 has a resolution of 1080 and supports 6 DOF for head tracking.

Well that's good news. 1080p is good enough for me, as that's what I game at now. Hopefully the consumer version is at least as good, whenever that gets released (next year?).

Hope you understand that 1080p centimeters away from your face is not the same as 1080p on your screen

Yes, but the lens system and DK2 DPI sort of make that 'different'. So in a way you are correct, it's not like a 1080p screen next to your face.

Were you just trying to be a snarky a@@ or did you have something useful to say about the rift? As to your statement, you are completely wrong. 1080p is 1080p, regardless of how far away it is. Now, if I'm doing something between the screen and my eyeball, then all bets are off.

I was commenting on how "good" the view needs to be. If it looks to me like 1080p, then I'm good. Whatever res ends up on the rift, if it looks like crap, they likely have to go higher, which is what they are doing.

And what ffrog said is correct ..."due to the lens system...". That's another reason why it's a device that needs to be tried, not bought sight unseen.

Im getting the Rift DK2, apparently to be shipped in August, and I just got a Warthog HOTAS and saitek pedals for Star Citizen, so I'm looking forward to trying out the Warthog DCS module and possibly Elite Dangerous as well.

Regarding resolution, 1080 right up against your eyes IS an improvement over the DK1 Rift, however it isn't the same as 1080 on your monitor. Xaito maybe didn't word it well or elaborate on why he has a downer on this tech, but its still worth knowing about.

For monitors even, 1080p "is" 1080p but you get much higher pixel density and therefore a sharper image on a 23" screen vs a 27" screen at the same resolution.

Pixel density suddenly becomes even more important in VR. Next time you have a look at a projector screen walk up to it real close and see how easily you can make out the individual pixels, and this is the type of problem you get with VR.
