Black screen after intro

Right after the disclaimer and the company names, it turns to black. I can't even get to the menu.
Please help

First verify the game cache to see if the problem might be fixed by that simple solution. Make sure no firewalls or such are on while you play the game, those might have an effect on it too.

If that doesn't fix it, try playing the game from it's location folder in administrator or launching the game in windowed mode. If not then try toying around with options in the menu such as Black and White effect, Screen blur, and Screen grain in the advanced tab of options.

If the game completely refuses all that, then try the patch that fixes problems users might have within the first few levels or main menu first:http://www.moddb.com/games/cry-of-fear/downloads/cry-of-fear-crash-patch-for-64-bit-users

Yeah I've tried all that. I played in on a low resolution in windowed with and without compatibility mode, but I can't even get to the menu. It just turns black after the intro of the companies. One difference I saw is when I play it with compatibility of windows 7, instead of not responding and when I click from the game, it crashes, it just stays black with nothing happening if I do anything

The last thing to try is to see if your video drivers need updating, that might be the problem.

Real bummer this has happened to ya, good luck on whatever you decide to do from then on if the video driver solution doesn't work :/.

Okay so I know I'm a "little" bit late on this but I found a fix. But ill post to this for the new players and are also having the same issue. So first, makes sure your drivers are up to date, if not update them. Then also make sure to verify the integrity of the files of the game with steam's built-in feature. And then final and I think most important part, make sure you don't have any of these things enabled: An Anti-virus Software, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) Software, Anti-Spyware Software, Firewalls & Security Applications, and anything included in steam's "Programs Which May Interfere with Steam" page. I had the same issue but I fixed it by turning off my VPN. If that doesn't work then try to redownload the game.

some internet providers have a built in VPN that can mess with the game launch so tried offline mode that worked for me.

FTR, it is a frequent problem that appears in many reports on ProtonDB https://www.protondb.com/app/223710 So far no solution have been found.

I think you can downvote the game for not working, hopefully developers will notice it and finally fix that.

oh my god thank you so much. I had a vpn on the whole time without realizing, when I turned it off the game finally got past the black screen :D
