Yeah, this happens to me alot and pretty much 90% of the community. There is no way to fix this im afraid. I looked everywhere, put compatible mode to xp, vista, nothing. Turned my windows features off, restarted my pc, nothing. Bethesda will not have an update to fix this because there more concerned on their new upcoming game Dishonered and hopefully the rumored Fallout 4. So if there is someway i wish i could help you but you could try those things out, but dont hope on it.

Thank you with the speedy response. I was afraid of this being the answer but nontheless I can accept it. Although I do feel cheated since I bought Fallout 3 GOTY with Fallout New Vegas on during the this year's summer flash sales. Oh well. Fallout New Vegas is still fun I guess. I did indeed hear about Fallout 4 which is supposedly taking place in Boston. I can't wait to hear more about it, throw money at the special pre-orders, and then finally play it.

Hi, this happened to me as well. There is a fix, but it doesn't work for everyone, although it did work for me so there is hope! I have 50+ hours played with maybe 2 - 3 crashes, but Fallout 3 would crash on my old PC occasionally as well. To fix it go into the fallout3 .INI file and change the amount of CPU cores the game uses. Googling will bring up how to do it. :) Best of luck! Oh, and I turned off all auto-saving features as well.

the same thing has happened to me. Im trying to get someone on my dorm floor to help me. I played FA3 on my PS3 clocking hundreds of hours on it. Since i could not bring my PS3 to school i decided to begin to play on my pc. Im a new pc gamer, having just installed steam the beginning of school year. Seeing FA3 GOTY for $20 seemed like a good deal, but after buying it, the same problem arose. Im not to tech savvy and i tried to do the suggestions on the formuns but nothing worked. I spent like 60 min in "Gameplay" trying to fix the bug all the time crashing in the end. If anyone does find a fix, please let me know because you are not alone suffering from FA withdraw.

I´m having similar problem with Fallout 3 GOTY

Found this and it helped me :

Fallout 3 crashing on 3+ core CPU's (fix here)
This is for people having problems, i know for some this may be old but i just want to help people who are having issues

Here’s a fix for the PC crashing, it is tested and fixed my issues:

1st if you are not using any codec packs download K-Lite codec pack, it has optimised settings for fallout 3 in the presets already included

2nd find fallout3.ini and edit it in notepad and find
“bUseThreadedAI*” (the number can be different depending on how many core you are using) change the number to 1 so it looks like this:
bUseThreadedAI=1
(this will make the AI script use only 1 core)

than find [general] and at the end of it add:
iNumHWThreads=2
(this will make it use only 2 cores)

FALLOUT3.ini is in your Documents -> My Games -> Fallout 3

For me it helped to download the Games for Windows Live which is necessary for this game -.-
It's a pain in the ass but we have to go through with it.
You can get it there: www.xbox.com/live/pc/downloadclient
Same goes for Windows 8 which I am currently using.

I was able to get mine to work by setting it to windowed mode. Been working on it for like 15 min and that fixed it. I'm not sure if there is a way to set it to borderless though, that is my next venture

I have the same problem but I use windows 8 ...
ChaosDX Nov 15, 2012 @ 6:49pm
Same problem.
Tried setting it to Windowed, tried using that "Windows 7 Basic" theme theory, Even tried that "bUseThreadedAI=0" thing. Though for some reason I don't have a Fallout.ini file, just one called FalloutPref which has a lot of code like that but for some reason doesn't have that specific code in it. I just added it in at the end. Still nothing.

I have the same problem with Fallout NV AND Fallout 3. I have tried every solution from the dll to the compatibility options and on to the CPU stuff and everything in between ... nothing helps.

The games have never even properly started, I've never even seen the main menu on either of them. DirectX and Video drivers are up to date. Nothing works, nothing helps.

:(

Well I don't have the problem with Fallout NV, that works perfectly fine or at least the last time I played it a few months ago. I only have this problem with Fallout 3. I don't think they'll ever fix it =/

This can be fixed via installing FOSE and this http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/1086
Look at my new thread.
