What is Ordinal 42?

When I tried to start up FO3, it says ordinal 42 couldn't be found in the dynamic link library under C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\xlive.dll. Can a wizard help me out here?

awww. so I can't play this game for Steam. What a ♥♥♥♥♥♥' waste of 19.99! But I can't get a refund with downloaded content. Oh well, besides, I don't have a Microsoft msn account. I used my Yahoo mail address for it, and it didn't work.

No you can play it, but windows 8 has an issue where you need to DL GFWL for some file (its wierd) in order to get the game to work on WIN 8 (steam version of the game)

Now I have a problem where when I play FO3 for a certain period of time, it'll freeze. Anybody know why this is happening good information is always helpful

Did Widowmaker84's tip help you? If not:
1) you can disable that stupid Microsoft gaming service in Fallout 3 with this file: http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/1086. It really helped me.
2) the problem with freezing is probably because you use Windows 7 and, as it's said in F3 description on Steam, it's not optimized for that OS. That can be solved with this: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2722281

Thing is, max expensive, is that i've never had Windows 7. This was a computer I bought in late December and I got it on the Mayan Apocolypse. lolololol. So the second part won't cut it. but i did try Windows games thing and redid the bUseHWThreaded=1 method. But is that mod really nesessary?

Of course, not necessary. Theoretically you should play F3 with Games for Windows service on. Because only there you can find achievements, for example. It's not the main goal - to get them all but that's pretty fun too. But all that's only in a perfect world. =) in our situation we've got buggy Microsoft service that doesn't want to work properly.

So GFWL is responsible for the freezing problem, and the mod is used to disable it? I suppose that makes sense.

ok i understand that i need to get games for windows but how do i get it on windows 8?
(im bad with computers)

So far, all I needed was GFWL and to change some files, and I haven't experienced a freeze during my last playthrough.
