Windows 8?
I press play, it shows the launcher, I hit play, and then nothing. Absolutely nada. I tried re-downloading it to no avail. Kinda new to steam and PC games in general. Help/advice?

Open up the fallouta_default.ini file in: steamapps\common\fallout 3\
Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=2

Then try running it. If it still doesn't work, run this http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/1086
You don't need to install games for windows live, but this just happens to make it work in windows 8. You only have to click disable once, then you don't need the program any more. Enjoy!

just download the games for windows live launcher, its not that diffifcult.

I have the GOTY edition of Fallout 3 on my PC. Editing the INI file didn't work, nor did downloading and running the "Games for Windows LIVE Disabler". The disabler just crashed complaining it couldn't find the fallout3.ini file. Nothing worked to get around this.

The only thing that DID work is what Sosa_tman suggested, which was to download Games for Windows LIVE launcher (actually called "Games for Windows Marketplace" client).

Zero launch problems after installing this, and I never even had to open up the Games for Windows Marketplace client.

I had to do what "oreodoh" described and download the Games for Windows Live. It did tell me that I had another version already installed and if I would like to install anyways. I allowed it to and have not had any issues since, before installing it off the Microsoft website I could not get the game to work, and have not changed the ini file at all, AMD fx8350 with Win8, now it works just fine. I still have the occasional lock up but that just seems to be old Bethesda games in general..

I´m also playing the Fallout 3 GOTY from steam in Windows 8, so yes, the game runs in Win8. I have a few CTDs, but those are not OS related, just the typical in any Bethesda game :)

Anyway you surely will have to apply the fixes described here: the INI fix, and install the GFWL client.

In My Games there's a file called FalloutPrefs.ini. Make a copy of this and rename it FALLOUT.ini, and the disabler will work.

THIS IS A LIE!!! THIS IS A LIE!!! THIS IS A LIE!!!

If you want your downloaded versoin of Fallout 3 GotY. follow this link!! I did exactly as this guy said and now im about to start looking for my father in the Capital Wasteland. It's an easy fix, DOES NOT REQUIRE: changing code/configuration or and hacking of the sort. Its a simple **Click & Drag** and putting a missing file into your Steam >> Fallout 3 goty Folder. After that just a simple Task Manger Tweak or two and you are solid. seriously it take 5 minutes.

On Windows 8. First install and it didn't works.
But after installing last version of "Games for Windows Marketplace Client" ( http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient ), it works perfectly ;)

No need to launch the client of MarketPlace before Fallout 3.

Just install it and don't think about it... :)

I had the same problem. I tried many things to fix it. I finally can play thanks to a solution on nexus forum. I just had to install games for windows live marketplace, log in and run it at the same time with my Steam. here's the link http://www.xbox.com/en-CA/Live/PC/DownloadClient
