Fallout 3 Crashes Right After Clicking, "Play" in the Launcher
Hi,

I just recently purchased Fallout 3 - GOTY. It'll launch and everything, but as soon as I click, "Play", in the launcher, the window for the game will come up, but immediately after it will come up with the error message that comes up when an application doesn't work.

I've tried adding the variables in my Fallout3.ini file, I've tried adjusting the resolution, I've tried putting it in windowed, I've set everything to the lowest possible setting. I don't know what to do anymore.

My PC specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate
ATI Radeon X800-X1300
Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz
3GB RAM

I knew the game would need some fixing before it can be playable on my Windows 7 machine, but I didn't realize it would be this much of a hassle.

If anyone could help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Same thing here, although it worked in the past (same system, config, OS, etc.), now I get "Fallout 3 has stopped working" ... I wonder if GFWL has something to do with this.

Great.
So, I just wasted $20.

I'm sure it'll be fixed, so no, you didn't waste your money... Hopefully. I hope a lot of people have this issue it'd expedite the fix.

i have the same problem

Glad to see I'm not the only one having this issue.
I don't understand why Bethesda won't try to offer support for Windows 7. It'd increase their audience and profit tremendously.

This problem is immediately fixed with step 1 in the pinned thread at the top of this discussion area. Take you 60 seconds to update windows live.

How about "no, it doesn't"

Honestly. If it did work, I wouldn't have posted here.

Well what happened when you ran the windows live update?
Did you get an error message?

Step 1 has quite a few things for you to try -- did you try them all?
Resolution change, etc?

A stated in my original post, yes. I tried all of it. I even tried a few things found on Google, and still, the launcher will open, but when I press, "Play", the game window opens, but it is completely black. After a few seconds, a Windows error message comes up saying, "Fallout3 has stopped working. Windows is finding a solution to the problem...".

I'll try asking these questions again since you didn't answer them.

What happened when you ran the windows live update?
(answer what happened during the windows live update process, not what happens when you try to run fallout).

Did you get an error message when running the windows live update?

Did you try the alternate link for the update provided in step 1?

Step 1 is the only thing that will help you.
No other fixes are relevant to crashes when clicking play in the fallout 3 launcher.

...I already stated in my original post that I tried everything - including everything in your post.

I had no issues installing Windows LIVE. Although it had no effect on the outcome of running the game.

OK, can you confirm that you ran the windows live update at this link and that you received no error message when you ran it?

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/pc/downloadclient

is that the update you ran or was it a different one?

You said you did "everything in my post", but my post warns you in all capital letters against doing everything in the guide until you successfully click play.
Did you do step 2 in the guide?
Did you do That would explain why you're stuck if you did LOL

No, I saw that if I have the Steam version, I should skip step two.
Yes, I ran the update from the link provided. Didn't help.
I also read somewhere on Steam Support that I should run the DotNetFX 32-bit installer. Well, I launched that installer and it said I had to enable windows features accordingly for Microsoft .NET Framework. It has always been turned on, as I rely on .NET Framework for some projects of mine. I rebooted my computer and everything, yet it is still telling me I need to turn it on.

Any advice on that?
