What's the difference on Linux?
On Linux, I have two listings in my library: "Left 4 Dead 2 (Beta)" and "Left 4 Dead 2 Beta". Apparently, they're different. "Left 4 Dead 2 (Beta)" appears to be the one that everyone else is using. So, what's the difference?

Which is weird, as the news sites were saying l4d2 is no longer in beta for linux. I have both beta and (beta) in my linux list, too. beta was already downloaded, (beta) is downloading now....*confused*

I suspect (beta) is a beta client, but has the regular version data. I noticed some minor differences between the two. It likely also is the Linux branch of the stable release, which is still beta quality, instead of the developer beta release.

Notably the (beta) version crashes more on the AMD fglrx driver. I haven't had the regular beta version crash yet on Linux, so I suspect I will be using that version for a while.

Thanks. I use the nvidia driver, so we'll see how that goes. Also, are there any differences in terms of multiplayer? Do you know if either version will be able to join multiplayer games with people using Windows? I would guess the '(Beta)' version, being stable and also showing as the same version as everyone else's, would work, but what about the 'Beta' one?

(beta) = The beta of the "ultimate" version of L4D2, so we can play with players using linux, windows or mac, and we can use the workshop :D. This will be the stable version of L4D2
Beta = A beta (You don't say?)

Alright, thanks. I'll use the the 'proper' (Beta) version, then.

for me (beta) gives a black screen with standard audio whereas beta works.
