If so why is it open to the public and not just linux users?

The Beta build not only allows Linux owners to play the game natively, it is also the testing ground for our new Extended Mutation System.

The Beta version also contains updated Windows and Mac clients, so even if you are not running under Linux you can help by testing the Beta.

Current changes in this build include:
- Server operators can now specify whether or not custom content is allowed when playing on their servers. This can be set on a per game mode basis - see cfg/addonconfig.cfg for details.

- Fixed main menu not refreshing after workshop add-ons have been loaded. Custom UI skins should display correctly now.

- Reworked add-on management to improve stability and properly support custom mutations

- Prevent an intermittant crash when browsing the add-ons screen

Is this still being used for implementing new stuff into the game? Or after EMS there's nothing new?

Well i noticed differences in the campaigns like different weapons at certain safe rooms like in original L4D2 u get an ak or something to start in the Mall, but in beta, i have an M4A1 or M16 or w/e instead on the table, plus, I noticed a witch spawned right near our starting location, outside the saferoom just a bit of a ways, Ill keep the beta installed as well, it's interesting how it seems to mix up the gameplay a bit more, it seems to be a testing ground indeed, and that's cool with me :) we could see some awesome developments come from it im sure (wish one day Gmod would support L4D and L4D2 )

When purchasing L4D2 it should ask if we'd like the beta added to our account. I mean it isn't really a big deal but I think it can lead to confusion.

"Do I install the beta since its newer or the original.. hrmm"...

With that being said, I'm still converting the non beta into the Walking Dead. I just need a good Rick Grimes, one that isn't based off of his deputy look. I mean he had that look for what, 3 episodes of season 1 and maybe 3 issues of the comic? Grungy Rick rules.
