Theories about plot? [SPOILERS!!!]
So, this is what I've been able to piece together so far. Please feel free to add your two cents or give your own hypothesis. I'm all ears - love this game :D

--Academy of Sciences
After unrest in the Telluric Republican government, the Nationalist proletariat and their leader, Chancellor K., are pledged the military force of the country. The outbreak of the plague leads to mistrust of the scientific community, and the Chancellor soon begins to discredit their work and the germ theory. Shortly after a gathering outside the Academy of Sciences, Telluric's citizens are angered and form a violent mob, destroying the Academy. In a bid to continue their plague research undisturbed, the survivng scientists plan to sail to the island Eden, where they suspect a cure can be synthesised.

--The Scientists & Herbert--
The scientists arrive at Eden with such classy names as Dagless, Sanchez and Cornelius embarking to different parts of the island to conduct their research and find the components of the cure.
(I haven't been paying much attention to individual stories apart from Herbert, Oswaldt and Sanchez - feel free to supplement if you think there's other stuff that needs telling :)

Progress goes well for some time; the men tackle the challenges of the island as they come, finding each ingredient over an unknown period of time [bold] with a conspicuous lack of monster tracking them down [/bold]. All three of the primary cure ingredients were at some point successfully produced, though there is no remnant of these "prototypes" by the time Robert Hughes shows up...

One researcher, Herbert, stationed at Outpost Vega in the West, begins to suffer due to his (perhaps undiagnosed) affliction with the plague. Despite his attempts to continue his work, even successfully locating one key specimen, he begins to suffer from auditory and visual hallucinations manifested in the form of an unreal, deformed "dervish" of a beast. He begins to look into anti-hallucination drugs, synthesising them from such common flowers as the Sunflower Variant found throughout the island.

(NOTE THAT THE SUGGESTED PLANTS [bold] DO NOT [/bold] PRODUCE ANTI-HALLUCINATION DRUGS (AT LEAST FOR ME - NEED CONFIRMATION)

Whether due to malfunctioning, inept anti-hallucination drugs or simply the continued madness of the plague, Herbert takes his obsession with the beast up a notch from paintings, and engages in a killing spree throughout the island for motives unknown. He tracks down his fellow scientists and kills them, showing brief moments of horror and lucidity throughout, before disappearing from Eden, leaving no trace but a trail of blood and words.


--Robert Hughes--

A plague-ridden man named Robert Hughes washes ashore on Eden. Hoping to find the enclave of "enlightened men", he instead finds the remains of countless murders and the notes the deceased left behind. Haunted by the same plague-induced monstrosity as Herbert, Robert must connect the dots and escape his fate as the beast grows ever stronger around him...

What I found quite interesting is the symbol for the nationalists. Its the same Herbert scrawls in blood in some of the notes. I tie that horned symbol to the creature really. Its probably an aspect of the hallucination kicking in, or it could indicate a connection.

Also, any idea on the significance of Paradise Lost on the table at the end? Just a reference to the island and leaving it? Or how the boat journey would be that.

Also, very hero's journey, the crate full of the cure on the boat. Very "the hero returns home with the elixer"
Robert Hughes is Herbert Gouhs: Robert's notebook has Herbert Gouhs name on it, as seen at the end of the game. (Also Herbert Gouhs is an anagram of Robert Hughes). As well, the paintings at outpost Vega of the beast, fit perfectly with Robert and Herbert being the same person.

IMO, the beast is a hallucination of Robert Hughes. When Robert is struck by the beast he doesn't get cut, he get's a fever. Furthermore, there is a distinct similarity between the symbol for the nationalists and the beast. Leading me to believe that Herbert's fear of the nationalists is coming to life. Also, looking at the notes left by the murdered scientist, there is no mention (that I have found) of any dangerous wildlife on the island. Meaning that the beast is all in Herbert's head.

Also the crate on the boat is full of the cure, Robert/Herbert didn't have enough resources to make a crate full of it. So the now dead scientists had been making the cure to bring back to Telluric. (and if Robert/Herbert was smart enough he would have opened the crate, cured himself and left)
Gah, misread the journal at the end, thought it indeed did read as Robert Hughes. Guess I missed the Gouhs part of Herbert's name as well, as I would of caught that anagram. It also gives greater meaning to the opening dialog referring to the player as a traitor. It seemed weird at first, I got that the nationalists didn't like the Academy, but it seemed weird that this random guy who went to the island would be labeled as such as well.
:D This is all making sense now! I thought that Robert must have had some connection to Herbert, but I just couldn't figure it...gg Miasmata. gg.
Well.... Once I saw Herbert's name it looked like a funny name to me. Then I saw Robert's name and connected it. Anagrams are easy for us gamer types.
I've finished the game, and the ending was confusing for me. Am I nuts, or did he kill himself after he opened the crate - that was my distinct impression? I assumed he did so because he realized that he was the murderer of the other island occupants. Again, am I nuts?
Yeah, you're nuts :P jk, but I think the way he puts the needle in and sits down is him completing the "circle". He's finally completed his mission, added his contribution to the legacy of the other scientists. He's sitting down with his knife, calmly gazing up into the sky, to remind himself that it's over, and that he's found his Eden. He doesn't need to fight any more. Though how he survived the starvation and dehydration on the way back to Telluric is another story.
@Zillen: but why the knife? I'd forgotten about that until Sweetie mentioned it, and now I thinkit has to be significant. And Bourbon to give him courage to do it.
So does this mean that once you get the cure that extremely annoying horned cat stops appearing? It would be a great game if they just left that out, or at least had an option to.
Yup, explored the island for several days after I had cured myself and haven't seen the beast yet.
Likewise - no best for me either, since taking the cure.

And I agree, it would be nice to have an option to leave the creature out. Sure, it's vital to the game it stands, but it would allow someone to play just for the fun of exploring. Of course, if you did that, there'd be a bunch of people selecting that option and saying "this game is boring", but it could be done as a cheat code or something.

(In fact, I'll bet there is a cheat code that the devs use for testing ...)
Great, thanks. To each their own of course, I'm just a big explore fan and not much of a horror or suspense fan. And I'll be the first to admit that in order for me to get annoyed in the first place I have to be into the game enough to get that way, so it's really a hidden compliment. Great game overall.

I've also found that it's possible, though slightly tricky, to get both Permanent Mental Awareness and Permanent Endurance Emphasis before the beast appears. This allows tracking it when it's near, sprinting farther, and swimming farther, making eluding and even staying ahead of it much easier. The former can be found from spongy and trumpet mushrooms along the northern coast of the bay visible from the first cartography hut (pretty far east for the trumpet). The latter I got from a giant bloom and a blue-capped mushroom on the way to outpost Tau (same general direction but northwest instead of east).
I found a journal note stating that there are three plants on the island that cure hallucinations. I'm pretty sure I found one and when I researched it and tried to make something from it I got nothing. Do you think that if you took one of those anti-hallucinations drugs that the beast would go away?
Also, the beast makes the game. The game developers wanted you to have that sense of fear and the beast is what makes this game exciting. Taking it out would completely ruin the game. It would not be the same thing.
The anti-hallucination drugs don't do anything. They were apparently left over (deliberately) from a part of the game that didn't make it into the final version.

And I agree - the beast is essential to play the game properly.
