there are no servers inside the game when i click the search button in freeplay, but in steam it shows a few servers.So if i click connect on any of these it will take me into brink, but it will time out every time.

In Brink, check a freeplay setup "Server Source" must be "Internet".
It must be working with steam servers app out of Brink.
You can alway use direct connect wtih IP adress and port.

Sample key binds for connect to main Brink servers
bind "F1" "connect 85.236.105.28:27715" // fast connect to the BAGU server
bind "F2" "connect 85.236.105.32:27015" // fast connect to the Endless Katharsis server

Or you can put it directly in console:
connect 85.236.105.32:27015

Don't bother with the BAGU server, went in their when it was first up, destroyed an admin i had 25 kills 2 deaths he called me a "hacker" and banned me. I havn't stopped laughing since.
