SOLVED: Co-op Mode - Losing money and inventory after crashes.
tl;dr

Solqom: Why do I lose all my gear when playing co-op on a friends hosted game?

Minerwars: Because you're there as a companion, we're probably not going to change that soon.
_____________

I dont know if this is soley me but I bought this game purely for the co-op experience. A friend and I bought it simply for that reason - we loved the idea of a fully destructable and persistant universe and being able to share that together. After playing the game and enjoying it I was really disappointed by losing everything (money earned, inventory, ships, litterally everything) after a game crash or logging out and rejoining. I mean, the game crashes are annoying in their own right, but I could put up with them because the game just ticks all the boxes for what I want from a space game (from the little I've played at least) - but crashing only to come back and have lost everything is just damn heartbreaking.

With this in mind I messaged support@minerwars.com to see whether it was a bug, or something they were working on etc.

Here's what I wrote and what I got back:
_____________

"Suggestions:

• Auto Resolution recognition. Playing with dual screens the default resolution caused the game to crash before I'd even opened it once. I had to go into the cfg file and make it launch in windowed mode.
• Saving Inventory. Playing co-op with a friend hosting meant that whenever the game crashed I lost EVERYTHING, all money earned, resources mined, items found - this really sucks. I could put up with the crashes if I didn't lose all my gear.

Love the game, just wish it was a bit more stable."

"Hello,
thanks for your suggestions, we're already working on auto resolution for dual screen, it should be ok with the next update.
We know about that, but but there's anything to be done. Game host earns money etc. as normal, all other player are there only as companions. Maybe one day this will be fixed, but I'm pretty sure it won't be soon.

Thanks for your support.

Best Regards,
Miner Wars Team"

Is it really that hard to get client data to save to the host or client?

What's the point in a game where you can go through the entire game co-op (with up to 16 people), but only one person can progress in any way?

Seriously?

I was considering getting a friend of mine to get a copy (or even gifting a copy), if that’s the case I won’t bother, reminds me of Dungeon Siege 3, only the hosts char gets saved, the coop partner just gets screwed, AKA absolutely worthless co-op

i suggest we start a request (in a polite way!) for this to get fixed, and sign it us all, maybe then they give it a higher priority.

yes this sucks.
and as you were saying, making the game create a txt file client or serverside which contains companion savedata isn't that hard. you can even just make it remember the name of the person you were playing with since most wont even touch the co-op and those who do will most likely only play with one or two friends.

amazing how nobody seems to care about this o.O
everyone's crying about DRM and things like that, but so far this is the only showstoper i find with this game, if i cant play coop for days with my inventory and stats saved then it's like not having coop

dev guys, i bought this game because i like space, but my friends only buy games because of the coop. So your missing like 4 potential customers in my case alone because i cant convince them over word of mouth since the coop doesnt save for companions.

As your reply has shown, the devs do not give two ♥♥♥♥♥ about it. Making a petition will do you no good. You have a better chance at getting a refund for a non-described product than you are at changing the mind of an ♥♥♥-hat of a dev.

You can also put your wallet where your mouth is and tell everyone you know to not buy this product. This will be the only thing that gets their attention.

Hi, there's discussion about this feature. We may add it in few days or weeks.

It won't be possible to transfer ships from one game to another (that's quite impossible without huge changes), but it would be possible to continue playing SAME coop game with same ship.

Is it worth? Let us know.
More people here = bigger change.

YES. This is definately worth it.

Like I said in my OP: "What's the point in a game where you can go through the entire game co-op (with up to 16 people), but only one person can progress in any way?"

I've not touched the game since my friends and I realised that co-op is essentially pointless, and probably won't until it has been fixed.

Yes it is, and please add this asap.
I bought 6 copies of this game for playing coop with my friends, i repeat 6 COPIES, just to discover that we cant really coop throught the entire game. None of em have even launched the game once because they only play coop, and that's certainly dissapointing.

A correction to this at time would be great

This is exactly why I even bought the game (and subsequently convinced my friend to buy it, too). I figured that a persistent-universe game with co-op included the players in the persistent part. We have not played the game since we discovered this lack of functionality. I would recommend this game to others if it weren't for this huge drawback.

Yes it's worth it. Put all resources into making it happen please.

Same here. Haven't touched it since I bought it for myself and a friend. Pretty disappointed.

Bumping this up - This needs fixing.
VCO Very Cool Oscillator Feb 11, 2013 @ 4:17pm
can we get a confirmation that this will eventually get fixed? you said days or week!, its been a long time already, please client side saves now!

Hi,
top priority is now "native" DirectX (we're replacing XNA with "native" DirectX)
See official forum: http://www.minerwars.com/ForumTopic.aspx?id=3206

It's top priority because a lot of people reported performance and stability issues (especially ALT+TAB). Beta build seems promising.

Offical DirectX version will be released probably at the end of February and this issue may be fixed too, but I can't confirm it now. I'll push it as much as possible. Hopefully, you can try it on Steam beta soon (see forum link above to play beta).
