Windows 10 downloaded update this morning, now Oblivion crashes at open
This morning Windows 10 downloaded an update. It fooled a bit with the one drive directory, but I don't keep anything game related there. Anyway my modded version of oblvion crashes after the initial load screen. I had about 72 hours with the game and only had the occasional CTD. Any ideas what the update may have done to mess things up or suggestions as to how to fix things?

Update: I uninstalled and reinstalled the windows update. No difference. I updated the drivers on my AMD GPU, no difference. All my other steam games run properly.

Run Oblivion in compatibility mode for vista/XP.

Or get rid of your win 10 malware.

Paladin, I'm a bit of a computer newb. Are those suggested fixes or criticism of Windows? Any help is appreciated.

Windows 10 by his nature is a very draconian system that's why you must study any product before installing on your pc.I know i may be too late for you to turn back the installed updates but i will leave a video it use when i installed windows 10.

The plan is to have a clean gaming environment without windows 10 interfering with you and the programs you use everyday.

Also after every windows update you need to check for updates on your other products on your pc, because windows many times returns your other services updates to their default status.

It seems some injection mod causes this crash. I have mazed on trying to work JPWikiMOD...
Make a try to rename some dll mod's filename extention.

I did the windows optimzation suggested by Paladin and also the newer windows anniversary optimization guide by the same fellow. Oblivion still crashes when it tries to load a save. I saw the other thread that referred to dll from fallout and tried to use the dll for AMD cards and that didn't solve the crash either. A review of the web reveals that anniversary update 1607 has messed up a lot of games, particularly bethesda's. My computer knowledge is too limited to understand most of this stuff. Sadly, I guess I have to hope for another update that fixes instead of breaks stuff. Fingers crossed.

Oblivian broken too since Windows 10 updated. Initially saved game appears to load and then a view of total darkness. I don't know enough either to fix this the hard way. :steamsad:

Install the mod Oblivion Reloaded. OR solves the darkness issue appearing after the Windows 10 update.

Bevi, I don't know about ninjakate100, but my verson goes black and crashes to desktop. Does OR fix that or are you referring to a lighting issue (ie the screen is too dark).

I was referring to the total darkness issue. But maybe it will solve your problem too, you should try Oblivion Reloaded.

Crashing on the initial loading screen seems to be a missing master file problem. You should check if all your .esm and .esp files are activated.

No more Black screen after Windows 10 update!

I'm running a modded game and one of my mods needed HDR. Another way to solve the black screen problem (just HUD showing during play) when HDR is enabled:
Go the Oblivion Shaders folder and backup ShaderPackage002.sdp, then replace it with a duplicate of ShaderPackage019.sdp (i.e. rename 019 to 002). What I read is that this forces the use of a newer shader version. Finally, run with HDR enabled. Voilà! (image shakes a bit, but not sure if this is the cause or not)

Thanks for the update Ninja. Unfortunately, I can't even get past the load save screen without a CTD. I tried the both .dll fixes mentioned for helping some of the other folks w Bethesda games since the anniversary update. That didn't work. I've tried running as administrator and running the game in different compatibility modes. Nothing makes a difference for my instant crash problem. I actually just ordered a new monitor, so I may grab a new graphics card and switch to Nvidia where it looks like the driver roll back fixes the anniversary update issue. I'm not skilled enough with the computer to uninstall and reinstall Oblivion without losing the mods or saves (I think). So I will wait to see if M$oft releases an update to fix the havoc they wrought. Unlikely. Glad you got game back running!
