Considering possible bad reviews for these reasons at least, the actual average score seems accurate to me.
Bring us more content. Either thru DLC or anything. I buy.
Then, I bought a lot more platformers, including Electronic Super Joy, Super Meat Boy, Guacamelee, Rayman Origins/Legends and Trine 2.
Having played all of them extensively, I went back to Giana Sisters TD (where I was already on 3-9 and spent around 15 hours on it). I tried so hard to play 3-9 on the regular mode, but I couldn't. The game didn't feel "right". Then I played on easy (I know, how sad). Won it after slugging it out for a while.
Yes, you may say I faced difficulty because I came "out of touch" with the game since I didn't play it for almost a month in between, but then here I noticed some glaring "flaws". For example, the floaty and imprecise physics of Giana. When you run, she has an inertia and tendency to "overshoot" by a bit.
So yes, for people who have extensively gamed with platformers, Giana Sisters TD may not be very good. But if it is one of the few platformers you ever played you'll not notice its flaws.
I really enjoyed it. I didn't think its any different than trying parts of a level over and over in super meatboy. When I finally level a really hard part I am extremely excited!
something more your speed
It's no fun to play the exact same level you already beat and collect all the gems again just because you wanna finish it with 5 stars.
Now i just finished 3-1 (which i consider very easy) and the fun is back again, i like to explore places for hidden gems. And i like that every new world has some new gameplay elements like the bubble gum in world 3. At this moments i'd give the game a 9/10.
But when i get forced to play a level i already beat again and again just to get 5 stars it's really frustrating and boring. Imho they should seperate stars and collecting gems maybe even seperate endbosses and normal levels so you don't have to collect all gems again and again just to get 5 stars. Also a restart button would be great because there is no reason to finish a level if you already died 10 times - you won't get 5 stars anyway.
Haven't been able to play it yet (Still OCD in finishing of Binding of Isaac AChievements before I move on to something else. I am going crazy trying to get Dark Boy, which is the only challenge I have left really), but I am definitely going to start it up and play it for a couple hours when I am done with BoI. Bought it for $4 I think so I'm not exactly gonna be hurt if I dislike it. STill it sounds like it is a pretty solid game based on the "fair" comments from the board I have seen on it. I didn't read any of the reviews on it.
Usually when I see a really low Metacritic I look at the forums. ESPECIALLY for Indie games because a lot of times the reviews are written far too early to give the game a fair score. Like the game wasn't quite finished yet, bugs prevent things and we get a bunch of idiots writing off the handle reviews. Then when I see a game is difficult on top of that I usually see about 20 points shaved off reveiews for that alone based on the angsty losers that decide they need to give games scores like 1/10 because they were so frustrated.
REview scores are horrid now from most gamers. Good games that people don't like are given score of 1-2/10 for no reason other than they aren't their kind of game. Then games that are barely average in quality get 9-10/10 by these kinds of people as well just because they "liked" it. No middle ground. Only numbers that are used by these types for review scores are 1/2, or 9/10. IF a game has a score of a 7 it "sucks" apparently to these people. HArd games get ripped fairly often though because they cause so much rage, and when rage is involved drastic scores are the answer to their rage. XD
I like the difficulty and challenge sofar. Then again, I love to collect every gem with as few deaths as possible the boss fights annoys me...a proper boss should annoy players. That's a good game according to me.
We here at BFG love to read your different views on the game, it is nice to see so many people enjoys the challange we have given you all.
We hope that you will enjoy our stand alone wich will be coming soonish ;).
