What can't be said about this game. It was innovative, fun, and compelling all while giving you a large number of ways to kill all the hazards of the Capital Wastes. The beginning of this game is one of the best I have seen in a game, giving you a depth and connection to your character and the people involved in the story. I won't go into detail, but character creation literally begins with your birth. The story was awesome, and the characters were very memorable. One of my favorites, Moira Brown, was a riot and I loved the entire questline. She was full of hilarious dialogue and she wasn't the only one.
Next I want to talk about the gunplay in this game, which was, at times, somewhat annoying. Despite being able to switch from first to third person, neither angle was that great. Third person was awkwardly placed directly above your character and first lacked a true iron sight. These are only minor flaws, however, and don't affect your ability to aim. What does are the infinite invisible dice rolls that govern each bullet that flies from your barrel. Your skill coupled with the gun itself determine how accurate your weapon is. This is so much of a factor that you will, at first, have a hard time hitting anything outside of a certain range. But you don't have to rely soley on your own aiming ability. A systyem called VATS (Vault Assisted Targeting System) is a very interesting addition to the combat. You have what are called Action Points which are used to trigger your attack in VATS. once you're ticks of AP deplete, you are done until they regenerate again. VATS is unique in that it freezes combat and allows you to look around at every enemy (and friendly) within your line of sight. From there you can attack body parts which each have a percent chance to hit and their own hp bars. Limbs can be crippled to slow your enemy... if you want to do that... or make them less accurate, or you can go for the critical headshot.
Skills and levels are just one part of leveling up. Whenever you gain a level you get points for your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck) which affect things like how much you can carry and your effectiveness with weapons. Next you will distribute points into your Skills, which include things like Small Guns, Explosives, and Barter. Finally, you will be given a perk point which you can invest in one of the many unique perks. Perks are one of the most interesting advantages to leveling and add some of the coolest abilities to your character that are available in this game. One perk in particular adds a friend in VATS called the "Mysterious Stranger". After you aquire the perk he will show up randomly in VATS to kill one of your enemies. Another called Animal Friend makes it so that mutated animals will no longer attack you.
Overall i give this game 5 out of 5.
P.S. The reason you see such low playtimes on some of the better reviews has alot to do with the fact that they probably modded the crap out of their game. When you open it in FOSE it doesn't bring up steam at all, even though it is a steam game.
