Why not Finland?
While this might seem like a rant from the title, it is not. What this topic is about is that why hasn't eugen released Finland as a faction for Wargame. It surprises me, as eugen has done a great job by realeasing a phletora maps and factions, including all the nordics with armies. It seems strange to leave Finland out as all the other nordics which have armed forces are in the game and of course, if there would be an attack on scandinavia you would need to cross Finland.

However there might be one reason why Finland is not in the game as it would be most likely taken by the union after some fighting. However it still surprises me as most of the units that would be neede to make Finland a faction are allready in the game.

So: Why hasn't eugene released Finland as a faction?

I remember reading that during the Cold War Finland really tried to stay neutral because of its close proximity to the Soviet Union. I heard they went as far as to ban movies like Red Dawn because they feared it would upset diplomatic relations with the Soviets. I'm not an expert on Finnish history but from what I understand in a Wargame like scenario they would do everything they could to stay out of the fight.

While it is true that Finland would try to stay away from the conflict as well as posssible, it is highly doubtfull that they would not need to join the conflict in some way at some point, as Finland is strategically in a important position for warfare at the baltic sea. For example it is not hard to imagine that the union would like to use the finnish docks, to which Nato would answer by trying to destroy these docks, which would drag Finland to the conflict. Also as the union would need all its allies it can find to fight the conflict, it is likely that they would use this treaty: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-Soviet_Treaty_of_1948 to make Finland to fight in the third world war.

PS I have never heard that any movies would have been banned becasue of the close proximity of the union.

I think Eugen made the right choice to leave Finland out of WG:ALB as a faction. Although if you play the campaign, the map appears to suggest Finland as part of USSR.

While Finland had strong political and economical ties to the USSR, there is however also the issue of past bad blood during the early part of the century. Communist political ideology during the time frame of the game was also quite weak. To actually have Finnish soldier fighting on behalf of PACT is quite unlikely. On the other hand, economically, we were still very dependent on trade with USSR and joining any cold-war-gone-hot senario on NATO's side would also be disadvantageous.

However, in light of China's alignment with REDFOR in Wargame: Red Dragon (Sino-Russia relationship was quite hostile until AFTER the soviet union was dissolved), Finland with REDFOR is not really any less likely.

Perhaps in some future Wargame we may see them. Am I right in saying that Red Dragon brings us up to the late 90s? If they update the timeline to include 2000 to 2010 or later then Finnish Units would be part of the Nordic Battlegroup which would be quite cool I think.

I thought Finland was already taken by the Soviet Union in the campaign?

Finland is a part of USSR when you play yes. I doubt NATO would manage to mobilize troops faster than the time it would take to annex Finland into the Soviet Union. At least that's how I interpret the reason: Finland has already been annexed when the story of Airland Battle begins.
