AP vs armor
short question, do i understand the values correct that e.g. to kill a tank with a armor value of 15 i need a gun with at least 16 ap power to pierce trough it?

Not really it's like Hit points If your AP power is 15 and the tank has 16 armor points it will almost take the full value of the gun. Get it or you need more explianation?

I always wondered how much damage a certain gun would do to certain armor. IE 9 Armor protection vs a 20AP gun

The armor unit would be destroyed in one shot.

Right so armour 16 gets hit by a gun with 15 the tank now was 1 point armour left? So it's dead on second shot from anything?

but that would mean using a gun with an AP power of 1 you could theoretically kill a T80 even trough the front armor, it just takes several shots!?

Yes

ok thanks for the clearification. see you on the battelfield ;-)

Remember it depends on where the tank is hit. Tank's have most of their armor in the front, so it might take some several hits to kill it( From the Front). However, if you hit it on the side you can kill it within 1-2 shots.

Where did you get this from?

6-7 damage depending if gun is HEAT or KE.

If it is HEAT it has min 1 damage. KE has min 0 damage and will do nothing (until it is close enough).

No. An armour 16 getting hit by a 15 AP weapon will take 1 damage if HEAT.

well, now i have the feeling it is not that clear anymore. so could someone who really knows how the damage mechanics work answer the original question. the in-game units stats "strength" do actually also refere to as unit numbers or in case of tanks to hitpoints. therefore the armor rating must add to the overall unit survivability in a different way as meteor suggested.
thanks in advance

Taken from the 176 page comprehensive guide to wargaming

"A weapon’s power is given in two values - AP and HE, or Armor Piercing and High Explosive. A weapon need not have both AP and HE characteristics. AP damage is the base damage applied to enemy armor - if you have a 12 AP gun and hit an armor rating of 10, you will do 2 damage. The formula appears to be (it does not seem to be officially confirmed)
damage = (attack value - armor value)/2 + 1

If the target’s Armor value exceeds the AP value of a shot, the unit will not fire on that target and attempting to do so will see an Inefficient! error. The unit will have to move close enough for the proximity bonus to AP value to exceed the target’s Armor value."

In addition to this I know that AP type weapons increase the damage value the closer you get to the target, where as range has no effect on HEAT weapons damage but HEAT will always do 1 damage reguardless of AP value (IIRC).

thx

So that's why the T80U is so good? It's 20 frontal armor makes pretty much everything outside of ATGM's ineffective to the front, at least until point blank range? Now that I can see the formula I can see the use of that...

Someone made an excel sheet comparing the AP values to different armor values and saying how much damage would be done, both HEAT and KE. Anyone know the formula for calculating accuracy/AP at different ranges though because I assume that works for farthest range?
I have no idea what the formula is for range/AP but I read somewhere that its 1 point of AP added for every 100 or so meters up to a certain amount.
I have no idea if this is true or not, i have not tested this and I don't remember exactly when/where I read it.
