This is a First Person Brawler with a simple combat system, original and out of the ordinary art style. Featuring a 2-3 hour story mode and another hour of challenges.
The game uses the Source engine (Half Life 2) so it has limited but memorable scenes. The art style is astonishing and aestheticly looks like a wierd dream.
I really want to see the concept arts or a sketchbook from the creator. Technically the game looks okay. There are low res textures, jerky shadows and low poly stuff. But the caracter design, the weapons and the environment...man this game looks and feels really uniqe.
The music just like the graphics fullfills this wierd dreamy athmosphere. There are many memorable moments thank to the great combination of them. Voice acting is cheesy but funny. The dialogues are genuinely funny and serious at the same time. The sound effects are basic public domain stuff.
Gameplay wise well... it's simple. The main scenario is arena fight. You get to a locked area and you have to defeat all the enemies. Imagine these like nodes in a graph. These nodes are connected by edges that are basically linear paths. And overall the game is linear and the level design is linear too.
There is a turret section as well but still has the stong dreamy athmosphere so it's okay. You will encounter little enemies, normal enemies, normal enemies with weapons (melee, ranged), brutes and bosses.
The little enemies are crabs, chickens and those big rabbit thingys. I think most of them just spit you acid liquid. Normal enemies are basically fighting partners. These guys can pick up weapons as well. Enemy vaiety is nice here because there are different models and fighting styles. Brutes are big, tough enemies and you better kill 'em with melee weapons. They take multiple hits as well. Bosses are easy battles, just like old times: wasd 'em and shoot 'em.
You can shoot only in ADS otherwise you swing the weapon towards the enemy. You can throw the weapons as well. Mechanically these are the same as in other games but they feel strange and uniqe in a positive way.
The melee system is simple and easy to learn. There are basic combos and advanced combos. The game does a good job teaching you these things in the tutorial sessions. There is a challenge tower for pro players. It's basically a fight fest. You have to climb the tower and defeat all the enemies. Things could get hard here... :)
As I mentioned the Singleplayer story mode is linear and each replay will be the same. But if you liked the story and the wierd things in it, I'm sure you'll give it another go. However the Challenge Tower is pure gameplay and fun and absolutely replayable.
- Short but entertaining Singleplayer mode
- Visceral combat
- Simple and fun melle system
- Uniqe aesthetics
- Interesting art style
- Dreamy music
- Short Singleplayer mode
- Lack of MP features
- Mediocre sound effects
- Nothing special in technical level
- Linear levels
A nice game from the indie developer, Ace Team. I had great fun with it.
I recommend this game for those who like fighting games, wierd fiction, and for those who's time is short and want a short game.
