If anyone knows a workaround I'd be glad to know it
edit, tried a bit around this worked for me.
on windows navigate to the steamapps folder
Steam\SteamApps\common\The Critter Chronicles
rightclick on the CritterChronicles.exe and set up the compatibility mode to run as windows xp sp3. Start the exe from there and the game shouldnt crash. The save game can still be used. Hope it helps Ruukkukaktus
I got Windows 8 64bits.
Solved this in two ways:
1) "Compatibility mode" on WinXP sp3 (#comment 2)
Problem was solved.
Turning off compatibility mode made the game crash again.
2) "Run as administrator"
In compatibility menu check on "run as administrator" (but without compatibility mode).
Problem was solved.
After turning off "run as administrator" did not cause crash.
Weird.
The third solution (verifying; #comment 1) I did not apply, because my problem was solved based on "run as administrator" (now turned off; compatibility mode off).
I finished the game and I had no crash when painting the picture in the mage's tower.
So, turning on "run as administrator", starting the game, quit the game, then turning off "run as administrator", and play forever... works for me. I do not really understand why it works.
gives following error when entering yeti cave (consoleway):

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.
- first I changed resolution to 1440x900, quality high, edges high. Crash. Did not restart mac, just started the game again.
- changed resolution to 1650x1050 (quality/edges still high). Tied the rope to the salt grinder and immediately went into the kitchen (also tried to get back to the sanctuary asap and that worked too). No crash and the game continued as expected.
Thing is; I of course made a new savegame having passed the bug, then I thought I would like to recreate the bug/solution, so I loaded the old savegame and got a new crash. Restarted mac + game (not touching the settings again), tied the rope to the salt grinder, ran into the kitchen (or used the lamp shade straight away) and sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, but in the end I managed to get passed the bug in two-three tries.
Thus no definite solution to the problem, but I hope some mac users might have some luck with this information.
