Display settings problem

For some reason I can't change any display settings. If I try to do that, everything stops for a minute, the "do you want to save the current settings" window appears for less than a second, black screen, and then I see the settings menu. I choose "display settings" and see that nothing changed. I really want to change the resolution since the game doesn't work well on the default settings. Any ideas how to deal with this?

Maybe it helps. You can update your video card drivers and then you should to set up to being same display settings or resolutions for windows general desktop as game of The Cave or other games. I recommend SlimDrivers Free by SlimWare Utilities to update drivers.
