I wonder if those were characters that were considered but ultimately passed over. I was also trying to think of other Double Fine games they might be references to, besides Brutal Legend.
I'm hoping Double Fine will come up with some DLC or something for their actual stories, but I doubt they'll have time for it considering their current games in production.
I'm not sure if they were meant to convey any meaning. Rather, i suspect they were meant to connote the general idea of a treasure, ergo the jewelled skull - something mysterious, ancient and precious.
The trinkets definitelly weren't the desires of the previous group because, a - they died before they ever reached their desires and b - there were actually skeletons next to the trinkets.
Still, if one were to dig into the afore mentioned treasures, some meaning intentional or subconscoius would most likely appear.
The thespian award might be a reference to Psychonauts, where there such an item was present and wherein there was a thespian character.
The jewelled skull is a mystery to me. It's a common enough trope that it was surely used in some game, but no specific example comes to my mind. My guess is that it's just generic treasure.
The cursed guitar is the easiest. Sadly i didn't think to take a screen of the original tinket aras, but as i recall there was a skeleton next to the guitar who bore a striking resemblance to jimi hendrix. Or it might've been another music star. There is probably some kind of legend about one of those musicans having a magical/cursed guitat, which they may have even traded their soul for.
As was previously noted, on your second run you may get some of the desires of your previous team. I don't know if that happens only if you picked the corruptedm ending, but what i ahve noticed that you won't always get every item your previous team desired. I think the object of their desires may be added to a pool of potential trinkets.
As a second sidenote; if one of your team is the monk then you will have the opportunity to get your team's trinkets of their desires before you exit the cave, but ... it might not end well.
Jewelled Skull: Guybrush from Monkey Island.
Cursed Guitar: Eddie Riggs from Brutal Legend
Thespian Award: Psychonauts (though I could not tell you which character specifically)
Well they didn't necessarily play the games, did they. I had an suspicion that the skull might've been from monkey island but it's been some time since i played it so i couldn't be sure.
Good job on those two items.
The award is from Gloria in Psychonauts.
