New patch fixes bug causing low framerate
Hey, guys. Last night we patched The Cave to fix a bug causing low framerates.

The patch fixes the game if you just bought it, or if you haven't adjusted your display settings, so for most of you, please do this: Simply go to The Cave's display settings, and choose the video mode with the highest refresh rate. You want something like "1920 x 1080 x 60 Hz", and do not want "1920 x 1080 x 24 Hz".

The issue was that the game was choosing the video mode with the lowest refresh rate instead of the highest refresh rate. For people with monitors/TVs with 24, 25, or 30 Hz modes, the game would select that, and the framerate would often drop to half of that refresh rate.

A lot of monitors/TVs report < 60 Hz modes, and it's common in monitors that are connected via HDMI.

Fantastic! My girlfriend and I have been really enjoying the local co-op (thanks for that!), but even she was noticing the extremely slight frame stutter. This patch moves everything along fluidly, and is a much better experience. Now we can take in the amazing backgrounds instead of thinking about slight tearing. Thanks to all the DoubleFine folks!

Now... please fix the 30 FPS cap. If you want to be in the PC market, then you need to do a better job. We all have gaming rigs and expensive gpu's such that we can run games well at high settings, yet this console port has a foolish 30 fps cap.

Why do I have a 3d monitor with 120hz refresh rate if I can only play your game at 30 fps? Why would I buy a console port when I can just buy it on xbox.

Let me unleash the power of me PC please so I can thoroughly enjoy your game. You should have delayed the PC release.

Which frames problem was this supposed to solve. The one where it selected the wrong setting and just ran slow, or the problem where you start out just fine but keep slowing down until you really can't play.

And to say again differences on sidescrollers aren't even that noticeable because you don't have any fast moving graphics like on fps or racing games.

Thank you for the info!

Don't bother. Most people complaining about the 30fps cap are likely PC snobs who read somewhere that they shouldn't tolerate playing games with a single setting on par with a console. Honestly, probably don't know the first thing about PC's outside of the NVIDIA Control Panel and what they read online.

I wouldn't want developers to encourage their ego's anyways.

Still makes it a console port. I realize it won't be as noticeable as when playing a FPS, but it will still be annoying.

This shouldn't be an issue but they choose to release a console port.

And even if true... you just can't handle that, can you?

EDIT: Fixing the framerate cap would probably involve a lot of man-hours rewriting the engine (or so I read). For a smaller company, that's probably not very conceivable for the small number of narrow-minded PC snobs they'd satisfy in doing it.

I don't blame them. Watching you guys come out of the woodworks has made me really dislike the PC community. I've never seen a worse reason to not buy a game you want.

I never said don't buy it. However, the game would sell a lot better and play better if more effort was put into the PC version.

Anyways, the developers already admitted that the FPS should not be capped at 30, but wasn't fixed because they rushed the game out to release the game on 5 platforms at the same time.... which is fine. But here is to hoping they fix it sooner rather than later.

Selling better is debatable. Most people have probably bought the game and never even thought to look at the framerate, too busy enjoying it. I'm not alone in not realizing there even was a cap until the 10 upset people on the forums decided to make 10 threads about it. I just happen to frequent the forum even if I'm not having problems. Other Double Fine games did very well, Stacking was well received... for a smaller company making smaller games.

I feel like the people who would buy the game as a result of this fix probably wouldn't be worth the man-hours spent fixing it. Even if it is technically an issue.

Not debatable, but rather factual actually. Tons of people these days check the forums before they buy a game to follow the word of mouth surrounding the game. In the FPS cap thread, people have already posted that they didn't buy the game because of it. I don't think that is the right response for this matter, but people are in fact responding that way so you can't ignore that fact.

There's nothing factual about that. The 20 people that came to the forums in a tizzy over the 30 fps cap likely mean pennies compared to the hundreds or thousands that buy the game in the first week. On that same note, we'll never know how many people came on the forums and didn't buy it but never posted (I'm going to guess very few though, you folks seem to love a soapbox almost as much as I do).

Honestly, we'll never know. If Double Fine feel it's worth it, they'll probably patch it. Since they haven't in their other games either... I'm going to say the potential increase in sales is debatable at least.

So not true the game is capped on 30 fps because they build the physics and everything based on 30 fps. So they will have to rewrite a fair part of their game engine to be able to go above 30 fps. They will probably fix it if they ever make a real shooter or something like that where the increase fps will have a real noticeable effect.

This patch did nothing to solve my slowing issue. The game inevitably keeps getting slower and slower.
AntiPatriot Jan 25, 2013 @ 4:20pm
Same with me. Only started playing today, so presumably I've only ever been playing with the patch. Still, it's not only the framerate, there's a lag in the animations as I notice that the sound effects finish long before the animations do, i.e. they're out of sync. I've tried it with everything fancy turned off and checked I'm on 60Hz refresh, still as bad. I have a fairly decent PC, AMD 3.3GHz 6 core, 16 GB RAM, NVidia GeForce GTS 250, Win7. I'm able to run lots of games that I would assume are more resource hungry so would really expect better from this. It's a pity because it looks so good but the experience is kinda ruined. So I'm going to wait until ye have a better patch. Please have a look at what's going on for us will ye! Thanks.
