Feature Request: Launching games without running Steam at all
It would be really nice to be able to play games without running Steam at all. I would just occasionally start Steam to install new games or get some updates.

Just running the games? You would most likely be able to start them manually if you look at the file the Steam client uses to start the game.

Running them and keeping the Steam overlay features? No way due to how it's built.

I don't really want the Steam overlay. I just want to play without running Steam.

Then you can start them manually, just look in the folder for the game and it should be fairly simple to figure what file Steam is using to launch it. Check if it's a script (in terminal issue "file <filename>) and see how/what that one does to launch the game.

Though note that some games are too tightly integrated with Steam and can't be started "outside" of it.

You can definitely run at least some of the games without launching steam
Launcher files are normally kept in the ../Steam/SteamApps/common/game_name/ folder, and the launcher file itself is reasonably obvious inside.

Games don't appear to have an overlay, so Steam probably isn't being launched.

I suspect this is a bug, I don't remember this functionality in Windows. I can't remember explicitly checking either though, so who knows.

Games that come without steam DRM (almost all indie games in Linux store) can be launched without Steam. Just go to ~/Steam/SteamApps/Common/%gamename% and launch executable or bash script launcher.

If this only applies to some of the games, I'd like to see which games are working without Steam before buying the game (like a DRM-free logo on the game page or something). I'd also like to have an official promise that those games will be working always without Steam, even if there's some updates / patches / anything.
I'm also looking for this feature. Does anyone know if Superfrog HD is running without steam?

I agree. I don't understand why we need to always Log in the steam first before running the game. It should can be running the game directly from the GameFolder directory.
