Help with getting Ubuntu to detect correct GPU
I've had the problem for a month or so, but never got around to dealing with it until now. The laptop I have has both an Intel HD Graphics 3000 installed as well as a Nvidia GeForce 640M. Naturally, the Intel one is the only one recognized by default, which I'd rather not have. So could someone tell me how I may go about getting it to recognize the Nvidia card? If any additional information is needed I will gladly provide it.

For optimus you can only use bumblebee at the moment.
Nvidia does work on propper support for optimus but this will not land before linux 3.9 or later.

Thanks for the info. Though it seems after I installed bumblebee and primus (I did this before your post), I get a black screen upon reboot. It doesn't want to budge from there, so I will have to reinstall it.
From what I understood from your post, only bumblebee can be used and not primus? I'll try it out and see how it goes from there.

Oh and one thing I should mention for future reference is that I am running 12.04 installed with the exe file for WIndows.

I have no clue about primus and i would never install ubuntu with wubi (i would never use ubuntu at all, but this is not the topic here).

I chose Ubuntu because of the simple exe install file which allowed easy removal. Though this easy exe might be the cause of all my problems.
After trying to install just bumblebee on a clean install of Ubuntu, restarting had the same outcome as before. The purple'ish boot screen popped up then just went black. So I think it's safe to say it doesn't like the driver.
