Nouveau Graphic Driver and Steam Linux
Hi,

I would like to know if the Nvidia open source driver (Nouveau) works correctly with Steam Linux games (Valve games and Non-Valve games)

I try Steam Linux on Debian Wheezy 64Bits + Mesa 8.0.5 and for two games (TF2 and CK2) it's unplayable with Nouveau. Black Screen for CK2 and TF2.

So for you, if someone has tried to play with Nouveau and if it's works, how you made ?

Thanks,

Besides, that mesa 8.0.x is too old for steam, are you sure, you have the needed 32bit papckages for nouveau installed?

Yes, on Wheezy i installed libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental:i386 before to try with these game.
So i must to try with Mesa 9.x ?

libgl1-mesa-dri is not enougth, you also need libgl1-mesa-dri.

:) libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 is already installed

grr, typo, you needa also libgl1-mesa-glx in 32bit.

Hum... libgl1-mesa-glx in 32bit = libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 on Wheezy 64Bits with multiarch.

Actually, i installed :
libgl1-mesa-glx
libgl1-mesa-glx:i386
libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental
libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental:i386

I highly doubt that Steam is going to work with Nouveau. Is there some reason you don't use the proprietary Nvidia driver?

I do kernel work for instance and installing the giant nVidia blob every time I want to use a new kernel (4-6 times a day sometimes) is a pain. Plus, the nVidia drivers are often not compatible with mainline kernel. nVidia has only excuses for not participating in nouveau development, I just wish there was an alternative for gaming that wasn't ATI.

Never use the same OS for developing and everyday stuff/gaming. Dual boot or use virtual machines. This a very basic thing...

Nouveau for gaming: Reclocking is still not quite there. Until then, forget games with nouveau.

ATI: ATI has been dead for 6 years. Some people are slow. Think of it this way: If you had a child when the ATI brand was put to rest, that child would already be going to school...

Some people spend $500+ on a GPU. Using a Nouveau driver with that kind of hardware would be like using homemade fuel in your Ferrari. Just don't do it. It might kind of work but the performance will be ♥♥♥♥ compared to the real thing and you may actually cause damage.
