Fix tearing problem using proprietary nvidia driver and x11
I had tearing-problems with my GTX 680 on Debian Jessie AMD64 after installing the proprietary nvidia driver 346.47

I finally fixed it this way:

nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

edit the following:

Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Device0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }" Option "TripleBuffer" "on" Option "AllowIndirectGLXProtocol" "off" SubSection "Display" Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection
(add the 3 Option lines)

I hope this could help some linux/debian users. Enjoy gaming!

How about Ubuntu. There is no xorg.conf. Any ideas about that ?

I'm not a ubuntu user but as i read here[wiki.ubuntu.com] you may create an additional file e.g. /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/tearingfix.conf which will be automatically merged into your configuration.

Maybe you can try this:
Section "Screen" Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }" Option "TripleBuffer" "on" Option "AllowIndirectGLXProtocol" "off" EndSection

Well let's see if that works

No this didn't help. It kills my x.org sessions.

on ubuntu you can use the nvidia-settings utility to set your display options, then save it as a xorg.conf file, and then edit it to your liking. once you're satisfied you can place xorg.conf in /etc/X11
