Opensource drivers much faster for me with 3.8 kernel and 6850!
I'm running the opensource radeon drivers with xorg-edgers from
And now with the 3.8 kernel, I have to say they're super fast and smooth! (Remember to install linux-image-extra, that's where the radeon driver lives!)
TF2 and CS:Source both work great for example.

I'm using a Radeon 6850 (so that's the r600 driver), 64-bit Ubuntu 12.10 (but the graphics stack is from xorg-edgers of course), Core i5 2500k.

And to make your card go cooler, put this in /etc/rc.local
echo dynpm > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method

Doh, of course. 6850! Updated the top post.

I tried the latest opensource drivers with my 6870 and TF2/CSS ran much better than I expected.
SS3 and Trine 2 didn't work well (had graphical errors).
If I had the HD 4000 series and older, I would definitely be running opensource drivers.

The strange glitching triangles that you got with the HD 4000 cards on Source games are now finally gone as well. Runs awesome!
One last (new?) Source issue remains for me: Looks like the in-game overlay freezes the whole output of the video card when triggering an achievement. Sometimes it's just really short, sometimes it just stays like that. Switching to another virtual terminal and back gets it going again.

"dynpm" btw only works with a single display so far.

I have an HD 4200 series, with the latest legacy driver. Is it really better to use the OpenSource drivers from xorg-edgers?

I have HD6670 1GB running Ubuntu 13.04 and 3.8 kernel and HL: Source Deathmatch is almost playable on lowest graphic settings. There is a momentary hickup every few seconds that makes serious playing not possible.

UPDATE: I just updated my 13.04 to kernel 3.8.0-18-generic and I can now play with no hiccups!! It's like frickin' magic!!!! I can even turn up a few things like high quality sound, and medium textures!!!!! CS:Source works too, but is not quite as smooth, and so is not quite really playable yet.

I used to run the Free driver for years on my HD5770, but had to switch to Catalyst due to my not-quite-as-powerful a10-5800k. I'm really looking forward to switching back in the future. The Free driver even has video acceleration, and basic OpenCL now! The only thing lacking is a bit better power management, and it's perfect.

Even with Debian and mesa from, Portal is smooth as never before...

I'm using the opendrivers, but I'm going to them from these xorg-edgers ppa. Thank you!
I'll let you know if I'll feel the difference.

EDIT: I found no difference playing Portal with xorg-edgers tbh. I'm using an HD4650.

I prefer the opensource radeon drivers on Arch 64 and HD 6850, but unfortunately CrossFire is not supported by this driver.

yesterday I tried that. newest Kernel 3.9 and newest radeon packages from xorg-edgers. I have a HD 6670 and i must say, for Opensource driver they are really fast, but for me the fglrx is a lot faster. especially on Emulators like dolphin-emu.
