Steam on Cinnamon
Hello. I've Arch Linux with Cinnamon with Radeon HD5650M and Catalyst 12.11 driver. I finally ran TF2 on these driver but only on Gnome. On Cinnamon i have black screen, no video, only sound. But, when i did alt+tab, in thumbnail i see screen from the game. What's the problem?

I couldn't get TF2 running with Cinnamon either.
Other DEs didn't give me that issue.
On xf86-driver-ati running fine but framerate is very low :(
Interestingly it's just the other way 'round when using a card that is one generation older - acceptable framerates with the free driver but glitches that are no fun.
Same thing for me on Cinnamon. Already reported that issue to the Cinnamon devs. The issue only occurs with the combination of Cinnamon and the proprietary graphics driver (fglrx) for me. Even the Cinnamon panel itself has e.g. some animation problems with the fglrx driver it seems. The blank screen issue appears also with Gnome 3 I got told. Cinnamon is based on Gnome 2 and partly on Gnome 3 as far as I know. Btw. on Linux Mint when I choose Gnome classic that issue does not appear.
I have exactly same issue ;)
Btw if you want to keep up with what the Cinnamon devs say check my issue report on GitHub: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/1513

Another thing. It seems to be an issue with all "fullscreen" applications. (Actually I think they run as maximized, borderless windows since otherwise normally you couldn't use e.g. Alt+Tab).
I'm on Arch as well and indeed, when in Cinnamon DE, playing games in fullscreen results in a one-coloured background. It also occurs when trying to watch videos (fullscreen) in mplayer using the vaapi video output, with xv fullscreen videos are displayed just fine.

Everything works as intended in Gnome Shell and other DEs/WMs that I've tried.
I ran Extreme Tux Racer and GTA San Andreas on wine in fullscreen and works's fine, only issue is all the time pressed "W" key (strange bug). But fullscreen is ok.
Just had a look and indeed, some games do seem to work in fullscreen, OpenArena for example. Then again some, such as Trine 2 and Portal through wine, don't.
I'm using the Pantheon WM and I also have the fullscreen issue with AMD binaries.
Btw a temporary workaround on Cinnamon is to keep switching ttys until the picture on the graphical interface is there. (e.g. CTRL+ALT+F1 for a terminal and then back to the graphical inteface e.g. CTRL+ALT+F8). Of course this can't stay this way.
Same problem.

I have two graphics cards in my laptop - APU and GPU.
If I start full screen game on APU (AMD 6520G) on Cinnamon, I have blackscreen. Only on Cinnamon. No matter, if 12.10 of 12.11beta11 drivers.
Same issue. games and youtube fullscreen is just black. Mint 14 cinnamon. Will try MATE now..

edit; Yes, it works fine in Mate! Too bad I don't like the oldschool Mate that much after Cinnamon..

Games seem to work fine in "Unity" and "Ubuntu Classic" modes too. (A6 APU w/13.1 Drivers)
Starting windowed in Cinnamon works fine, still haven't been able to find what's causing full screen to bug-out. Starting in windowed and going to full screen isn't working proper either. For now I'm just using classic, everything seems to work fine and have good (>100) FPS in Counter-Strike: Source.
